COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (5-6-2 overall, 3-3-2 in the WCHA) earned its first-ever win over an ECAC opponent, defeating Northeastern, 4-3, in overtime Nov. 25. The Huskies came back strong in the series finale and topped the Buckeyes, 3-0, Nov. 26 at Matthews Arena.
ON TAP THIS WEEKEND
The Buckeyes return home for the first time since Nov. 11 to battle returning WCHA champion Minnesota-Duluth. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the OSU Ice Arena.
NORTHEASTERN SERIES RECAP
The Buckeyes defeated the Huskies, 4-3, in overtime Saturday.
Shana Frost scored the game-winning goal with 3:59 remaining in the overtime period and was named the first star of the game. Jeanne Chapple scored twice, including the game-tying goal in the third stanza, and Heather Farrell collected two assists, with one coming on Frost’s gamewinner.
At 5:01 in the second period, Chapple put OSU on the board with her fourth of the season, an unassisted goal. At 13:33, Emma Laaksonen converted on a 4-on-3 Buckeye power play. At 3:27 in the third period, Chapple slipped the puck past NU goalie Chanda Gunn off a rebound from Frost and Farrell and tied the game at three. Just one minute into the five minute sudden-victory overtime period, Frost scored her sixth of the season, the game-winner, from just outside the crease off a rebound from Farrell.
Despite outshooting the Huskies, 45-20, Sunday, NU shut out visiting OSU, 3-0.
OSU goalie April Stojak played both games between the pipes and collected 35 saves and an .833 save percentage.
BUCKEYES IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
In the Top 10 poll released Monday by U.S. College Hockey Online, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is ranked tenth in the nation for the third-consecutive week. Three other Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams are among the Top 10-No. 3 Minnesota, No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth and No. 7 Wisconsin. The poll consists of ten voters, all coaches from Division I teams. Ohio State is ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll, also for the third-consecutive week.
HEAD COACH JACKIE BARTO
Jackie Barto enters her second season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s ice hockey program. She was named the first head coach in the program’s history Dec. 14, 1998. Barto led the squad to an 8-26-3 overall record and a 6-15-3 WCHA conference finish in its inaugural season last year. In addition, she coached the Buckeyes in their first-ever postseason tournament, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Championship. There, the No.
5-seed Buckeyes upset higher seeds No. 4 St.
Cloud and No. 3 Wisconsin to claim third place.Barto came to Ohio State from Providence College, where she was the head coach of the Friars. Under Barto’s guidance, the PC women’s hockey program flourished, compiling a record of 70-53-10 in her five years at the helm.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA-DULUTH
Shannon Miller returns for her second year at the helm of the Bulldogs after earning 1999-2000 WCHA Coach of the Year honors. Miller led UMD to a 25-5-3 record and the WCHA title in its inaugural season. The Bulldogs fell to Dartmouth College, 5-4, in the first round of the AWCHA national championships.
Nineteen returning letterwinners make up the core of the 2000-01 UMD squad, which currently is third in the WCHA.
Top returning scorer Maria Rooth leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points. Hanne Sikio follows with 21 points from nine goals and 12 assists.
Sophomore Tuula Puputti and junior Riana Burke will share goaltending duties this season for the Bulldogs. In 10 games, Puputti has amassed a .904 save percentage and a 2.01 goals against average. Burke has played in six games and has an .867 save percentage and a 3.32 gaa.
THE BULLDOGS-LAST TIME OUT
Minnesota-Duluth took Thanksgiving weekend off. The Bulldogs last faced St. Cloud State, Nov. 17-18, and emerged with a 7-3 win and a 3-3 tie. Satu Kiipeli and Erika Holst each scored two goals Friday and Hanne Sikio picked up three assists Saturday.
THE BUCKEYES-BULLDOGS SERIES
The Bulldogs hold a 3-0-1 series advantage over the Buckeyes.
OSU earned the title “Giant Killer” Jan. 28 when it skated to a 1-1 overtime tie with UMD. It marked the first win or tie over a nationally-ranked team in program history.
The teams last met Jan. 29. UMD won, 9-0.
OSU’S FIRST WIN IN OT
Ohio State’s 4-3 win in overtime over Northeastern was the Buckeyes’ first overtime win this season and first in program history.
Prior to the win Saturday, OSU was 0-1-5 overall in overtime games. This season, the Buckeyes skated to overtime ties with Wisconsin (3-3) Nov. 11 and MSU, Mankato (2-2) Nov. 18.
THE CURSE IS BROKEN
OSU’s 4-3 victory over Northeastern Saturday also was the Buckeyes’ first ever win over an ECAC team.
OSU lost twice to New Hampshire earlier in the season (4-0, 3-1). The Buckeyes will face St. Lawrence Dec. 30 and Cornell Dec. 31.
JUST “SHOOT” ME
In their weekend series with Northeastern, the Buckeyes outshot the Huskies, 44-22, Saturday and 45-20 Sunday. The OSU offense has been outshot only once this season, by Wisconsin, Nov. 11.
Currently, OSU is outshooting its opponent, 445-250.
BUCKEYES KILLING PENALTIES
The Buckeyes held the Huskies scoreless through 6-of-10 OSU penalties last weekend. This week, Ohio State is second in the WCHA in penalty kills, with 43-of-52, or 82.7%.
Last season, OSU led the nation in penalties/minutes (277/573).
ROSEN ONE POINT AWAY
Corinne Rosen scored two goals against MSU, Mankato. She is second on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists for ten points. Currently, Rosen is tied for third in the WCHA for game-winning goals with two. Currently, the former Providence College standout is 50-49=99 in her career, only one point away from 100.
“FROST” ON THE ICE
Shana Frost scored one minute into the overtime period Saturday for OSU’s first-ever overtime goal. Frost’s goal, for which she was named the first star of the game, also was her first gamewinner of the season. Currently, Frost leads the Buckeyes in scoring with six goals and five assists for 11 points.
GOIN’ TO THE “CHAPPLE”
Jeanne Chapple is making quite an impression in her rookie season with the Scarlet and Gray. The freshman center had a two-goal game against Northeastern Saturday, including the game-tying goal. It was her second multiple-point game in as many weeks. She was named the third star of the game. Nov. 17, in OSU’s 6-0 win over MSU, Mankato, Chapple scored the gamewinner and collected two assists. Chapple is tied for second in scoring with five goals and five assists for ten points.
POINTS ON THE POWER-PLAY
Emma Laaksonen continues to come through for Ohio State on the power-play. All but one of the rookie defender’s eight points have come on the power-play. Laaksonen is tied for second overall in the WCHA for power-play goals with five.
HALCISAK MAKING THINGS HAPPEN
Freshman Kelli Halcisak also played a pivotal role in OSU’s win over Northeastern with an assist on Laaksonen’s power-play goal. Halcisak has scored a point in four of OSU’s past five games, including two goals. The defender is tied for second in scoring (3-7=10). Three of OSU’s top five scorers are freshmen.
FARRELL’S FIRSTS
After being sidelined for the first part of the season with mononucleosis, Heather Farrell has come back strong for the Buckeyes. In only four games, she has notched three assists, two of which have come on game-winning goals.
BUCKEYES ON A POWER [PLAY] TRIP
As of Nov. 27, Ohio State is fifth in the WCHA in overall power-play percentage, having converted 12-of-67 (17.9%) opportunities. Last season, OSU converted 17-of-193 power-play opportunities, or 8.8%.
THE FIRST “GOAL”
Scoring first has been a goal for the Buckeyes all season. “[Scoring the first goal] gets you going, it gives you confidence,” Barto said. “It automatically puts the pressure on the other team.” OSU is 3-1-1 after scoring first and 2-5-1 when scored on first.

WCHA CHAMPIONSHIP
All seven teams in the WCHA will participate in the WCHA Championship, which will be held March 8, 9 and 10, 2001 at Recreation Center in Rochester, Minn.
NCAA GIVES APPROVAL
The NCAA announced Jan. 18, 2000 that its membership adopted legislation to establish an official championship in women’s ice hockey, effective with the 2000-01 season. The 2001 championship will be held March 23-24 at Minnesota’s Mariucci Arena.
CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED
Corinne Rosen, Lindsey Ogren, Melissa Glaser and Emily Hudak have been named captains for the 2000-01 season.
Rosen led the team in goals (16), assists (17) and points (33). Ogren finished third on the team in scoring with 10 goals and five assists, equaling 15 points. She was the lone member of the Buckeye squad to earn a spot on the inaugural WCHA All-Tournament Team. Glaser appeared in 21 games between the pipes last season and averaged 26.4 saves per game. She also carried a 3.20 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. Hudak led the Buckeye defense in goals (6) and assists (6) last season and led the entire team in shots on goal with 143.
ON TAP FOR NEXT WEEKEND
Ohio State returns to the OSU Ice Arena next week for the last time in 2000, playing host to St. Cloud State. The Buckeyes and Huskies square off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 9. OSU’s next home contest will be Jan. 12 against Bemidji State.
