BOSTON, Mass. – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell to%^$Northeastern, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the non-conference series finale at%^$Matthews Arena. Following the weekend series split, the Buckeyes are 5-6-2%^$overall and 3-3-2 in the WCHA. The Huskies improve to 6-2-0 overall and%^$3-1-0 in the ECAC.%^$
The Huskies capitalized on two OSU penalties in the first stanza.%^$Seconds after Emma Laaksonen (Fr., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) was%^$whistled for obstruction/interference at 9:24, NU’s Lisa Giovanelli%^$converted to put the Huskies on the board first. With 2:04 remaining in the%^$first period, Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Moundsview)%^$received a two-minute minor for interference and gave the Huskies a 5-on-4%^$advantage. Jennifer Santerre scored a power-play goal at 19:25, her first of%^$the season.%^$
At 7:02 in the second period, NUdefender Jessica Ferwerda fired the%^$puck from point-blank range past OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent,%^$Ohio/Shattuck St. Mary’s) to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead going into the%^$second intermission.%^$
The Buckeyes earned two 5-on-3 power-play opportunities, one at 5:27%^$and the other at 16:40 in the third stanza, but were unable to convert.%^$Despite outshooting the Huskies, 14-5, in the third, OSU could not solve NU%^$goalie Erica Silva.%^$
OSU was unable to convert on eight power-play opportunites, while NU%^$went 2-for-5 with the advantage.%^$
The Buckeyes held the Huskies to just four shots in the second%^$period and outshot NU, 45-20. Stojak recorded 17 saves in the losing effort.%^$NU’s Silva stopped 45 Buckeye shots.%^$
Ohio State returns home next weekend for the first time since Nov.%^$11 to take on defending WCHA champion Minnesota-Duluth in a two-game series.%^$The Buckeyes and Bulldogs square off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 and 7:05%^$p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at the OSU Ice Arena.%^$
