No. 10 Women’s Hockey Tops No. 9 Northeastern, 4-3, In Overtime – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$BOSTON, Mass.-In a rematch of its inaugural series last year, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team took on Northeastern Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena. The Buckeyes defeated the Huskies, 4-3, in their second-consecutive overtime game. Following the non-conference victory, the Buckeyes improve to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the WCHA, and the Huskies stand at 5-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the ECAC.%^$
%^$Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) scored the game-winning goal with 3:59 remaining in the overtime period and was named the first star of the game. Freshman Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Moundsview) scored twice, including the game-tying goal in the third stanza, and Heather Farrell (Fr., Perth, Ontario/Pomfret)collected two assists, with one coming on Frost’s gamewinner.%^$
%^$NU’s Kim Greene netted the lone goal of the first stanza at 8:28 to put the Huskies ahead, 1-0.%^$
%^$At 5:01 in the second period, Chapple put OSU on the board with her fourth of the season, an unassisted goal. At 13:33, Emma Laaksonen (Fr., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) converted on a 4-on-3 Buckeye power play. Laaksonen took a pass from Kelli Halcisak (Fr., Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck St. Mary’s) and fired a shot to the left corner of the Husky net. NU right wing Betsy Dyke scored less than a minute later from Kim Vallone and Brooke Whitney. Dyke struck again at 19:22 and NU went into the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.%^$
%^$At 3:27 in the third period, Chapple slipped the puck past NU goalie Chanda Gunn off a rebound from Frost and Farrell and tied the game at three.%^$
%^$Just one minute into the five minute sudden-victory overtime period, Frost scored her sixth of the season, the game-winner, from just outside the crease off a rebound from Farrell.%^$
%^$OSU converted 1-of-5 power-play opportunities and held NU scoreless through four opportunities.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes held the Huskies to just five shots in the first period and outshot NU, 44-22. OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) played 61:01 and recorded 19 saves for the win. NU’s Gunn stopped 40 Buckeye shots.%^$
%^$Ohio State returns to action Sunday at 2 p.m. against Northeastern in the series finale at Matthews Arena.%^$
