No. 10 Women’s Ice Hockey Team Heads East To Face No. 9 Northeastern – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (4-5-2 overall, 3-3-2 in the WCHA) tied MSU, Mankato, 2-2, Nov. 17 after topping the Mavericks, 6-0, Nov. 18 at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
ON TAP THIS WEEKEND
The Buckeyes head to the east coast for the first time this season, taking on the Northeastern Huskies in a Thanksgiving weekend series. The puck drops at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Matthews Arena.
“We’re excited to play Northeastern,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach said.
“It’s a chance for us to play an ECAC team, to get out of the league and play a non-conference game, which is really exciting. We want to go out there and play strong hockey, play very aggressive and have a good weekend on the power play and penalty kill.”
MSU, MANKATO SERIES RECAP
Jeanne Chapple was named the first star of the game for her goal and two assist performance in OSU’s 6-0 romp over MSU Friday. Sarah Van Riper scored a goal and added an assist.
Chapple jump-started the Buckeye scoring drive at 8:43 in the first period. Melissa Pirie then set up Corinne Rosen’s goal two minutes later, at 10:56. Van Riper extended OSU’s lead to three at 17:38. At 18:13, Katie Frohreich collected a pass from Patno to send the Buckeyes into the first intermission with a 4-0 lead.
Just 3:33 into the second stanza, Kelli Halcisak scored her third of the season from Chapple. Chapple would also assist in right wing Shana Frost’s fifth goal of the season at 19:29 to put OSU ahead, 6-0. Although OSU outshot MSU, 45-16, Saturday, the Buckeyes tied the Mavericks, 2-2. April Stojak played both games in between the pipes, recording 35 saves and a .946 save percentage.
BUCKEYES IN THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
In the Top 10 poll released Monday by U.S. College Hockey Online, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team is ranked tenth in the nation for the second-consecutive week.
Three other Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams are among the Top 10-No. 3 Minnesota, No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth and No. 7 Wisconsin. The poll consists of ten voters, all coaches from Division I teams. Ohio State is ranked No. 10 in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll, also for the second-consecutive week.
“Without placing a lot of emphasis on the polls, I’m very pleased that our team is ranked in the Top 10,” Barto said. “I think that’s a great step for our program in the direction we want to go.”
HEAD COACH JACKIE BARTO
Jackie Barto enters her second season at the helm of the Ohio State women’s ice hockey program. She was named the first head coach in the program’s history Dec. 14, 1998. Barto led the squad to an 8-26-3 overall record and a 6-15-3 WCHA conference finish in its inaugural season last year. In addition, she coached the Buckeyes in their first-ever postseason ournament, the Western Collegiate HockeyAssociation Championship. There, the No.
5-seed Buckeyes upset higher seeds No. 4 St. Cloud and No. 3 Wisconsin to claim third place. Barto came to Ohio State from Providence College, where she was the head coach of the Friars. Under Barto’s guidance, the PC women’s hockey program flourished, compiling a record of 70-53-10 in her five years at the helm.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
Joy Woog enters her first year at the helm of a Husky squad that barely missed out on a berth to the 2000 AWCHA Championship. NU lost to Brown, the eventual champion, in the ECAC semifinals and finished the season 22-9-3. Nineteen returning letterwinners make up the core of the 2000-01 Northeastern squad, which currently is 5-1-0.
Brooke Whitney is at the head of the pack of Husky scorers with five goals and two assists for seven points. Lisa Giovannelli follows with six points from three goals and three assists.
Senior Erica Silva returns in the net for NU after starting all 22 games for the Huskies last season. In six games, Silva has amassed a .949 save percentage and a 1.31 goals against average.
THE HUSKIES-LAST TIME OUT
Northeastern is coming off a 4-0 shutout victory over Cornell Nov. 11. Brooke Whitney scored a goal and picked up an assist. NU fell, 4-1, to St. Lawrence Nov. 10, for its first loss of the season.
THE BUCKEYES-HUSKIES SERIES
The Huskies hold a 2-0-0 series advantage over the Buckeyes. This weekend will be a rematch of Ohio State’s inaugural series at the OSU Ice Arena, Nov. 8-9, 1999.
Lindsey Ogren scored the first-ever Buckeye goal Nov. 9 against NU. OSU lost, 7-2.
BARTO ON NORTHEASTERN
“They have very strong goaltending. They are a physical aggressive team with good size, they have a couple dangerous lines that can put the puck in the net. They also are solid defensively, which makes them well-rounded and experienced.”
BUCKEYE SHOOTING GALLERY
In their weekend series with MSU, Mankato, the Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks, 34-21, Friday and 45-16 Saturday. The OSU offense has been outshot only once this season.
Currently, OSU is outshooting its opponent, 356-208.
BUCKEYES KILLING PENALTIES
The Buckeyes held the Mavericks scoreless through 8-of-8 OSU penalties last weekend.
This week, Ohio State climbed to first in the WCHA in penalty kills, with 37-of-44, or 84.1%.
Last season, OSU led the nation in penalties/minutes (277/573).
BUCKEYES ON A POWER [PLAY] TRIP
As of Nov. 20, Ohio State is fifth in the WCHA in overall power-play percentage, having converted 11-of-54 (20.4%) opportunities.
Last season, OSU converted 17-of-193 power-play opportunities, or 8.8%.
ROSEN ONE POINT AWAY
Corinne Rosen scored two goals over the weekend. She is first on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists for ten points. Currently, Rosen is tied for second in the WCHA for game-winning goals with two.
Rosen’s two goals move her two points closer to the century mark for career points.
Currently, the former Providence College standout is 50-49=99 in her career, only one point away from 100.
GETTING A PIECE OF THE ACTION
Twelve different Buckeyes recorded points against MSU, Mankato last weekend. Jeanne Chapple, Melissa Pirie, Corinne Rosen and Sarah Van Riper posted multiple points.
NEW BUCKEYES GET ON THE BOARD
Heather Farrell, Christine Patno and Sarah Van Riper scored their first points of the season against MSU. Farrell assisted on Chapple’s gamewinner Friday and Patno also notched an assist. Van Riper was named the second star of the game Friday for her goal and assist performance.
STOJAK STAYS SOLID
April Stojak continues to hold her own between the pipes for the Buckeyes. Stojak earned her first shutout of the regular season Friday. She recorded 21 saves and earned a 1.00 save percentage. Saturday, Stojak stopped 14 MSU shots for an .875 save percentage. She has started all 11 games for OSU this season, racking up 667.28 minutes and a 2.43 gaa.
FARRELL’S FIRSTS
Frosh Heather Farrell played in her first two collegiate games over the weekend. Following a bout with mononucleosis which kept her sidelined through the first nine games of the season, Farrell debuted in a big way for the Scarlet and Gray Friday. She assisted on freshman teammate Jeanne Chapple’s game-winning goal in the first period.
Farrell, a native of Perth, Ontario, attended Pomfret School, where she led her team to the 1999-2000 conference playoffs. She also was a member of the Connecicut Polar Bear team, which won the national championship in 1999.
SIX PACK ON ICE
All six freshman Buckeyes have seen action this season and all six have recorded points. Freshmen account for 28 of 69 total team points–Halcisak leads the pack with nine, Chapple has eight, Laaksonen follows with eight and Heather Farrell and Erin O’Grady have one.
Three of OSU’s top five scorers are freshmen.
ON THE “PLUS” SIDE
Four Buckeyes emerged with a +/- rating of +3 from OSU’s 6-0 victory over MSU Friday. Right wing Melissa Pirie was +5 on the weekend.
THE FIRST “GOAL”
Scoring first has been a goal for the Buckeyes all season. “[Scoring the first goal] gets you going, it gives you confidence,” Barto said. “It automatically puts the pressure on the other team.”
OSU is 3-1-1 after scoring first and 1-4-1 when scored on first.

WCHA CHAMPIONSHIP
All seven teams in the WCHA will participate in the WCHA Championship, which will be held March 8, 9 and 10, 2001 at Recreation Center in Rochester, Minn.
NCAA GIVES APPROVAL
The NCAA announced Jan. 18, 2000 that its membership adopted legislation to establish an official championship in women’s ice hockey, effective with the 2000-01 season. The 2001 championship will be held March 23-24 at Minnesota’s Mariucci Arena.
CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED
Corinne Rosen, Lindsey Ogren, Melissa Glaser and Emily Hudak have been named captains for the 2000-01 season.
Rosen led the team in goals (16), assists (17) and points (33). Ogren finished third on the team in scoring with 10 goals and five assists, equaling 15 points. She was the lone member of the Buckeye squad to earn a spot on the inaugural WCHA All-Tournament Team. Glaser appeared in 21 games between the pipes last season and averaged 26.4 saves per game. She also carried a 3.20 goals against average and a .895 save percentage. Hudak led the Buckeye defense in goals (6) and assists (6) last season and led the entire team in shots on goal with 143.

Ohio State returns to the friendly confines of the OSU Ice Arena, playing host to Minnesota-Duluth. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs square off at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2.
