Women’s Hockey Blanks Toronto, 3-0 In Preseason Exhibition Game – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State women’s hockey team opened the 2000-01 season Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Arena with a 3-0 exhibition win over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The Buckeyes jumped to an early lead at 6:07 in the first period and never looked back. OSU right wing Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) scored a power-play goal from Emma Laaksonen (Fr., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) and Emily Hudak (So., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy). Frost and Laaksonen would connect again at 17:06, giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
Center Corinne Rosen (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Pomfret) extended OSU’s lead to 3-0 at 8:21 in the second period. Assists went to Lindsey Ogren (So., North Oaks, Minn./Moundsview) and Laaksonen.
Ohio State outshot the Varsity Blues, 30-22, and converted 1 of 10 power play opportunities. Toronto went 0 for 8.
The Buckeyes were led in goal by April Stojak, (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) who saved all 22 Blues shots. The Blues split time between two goalies. Stephanie Drake started and played 20:00. She finished with nine saves. Ali Houston played the remaining 40:00 and recorded 18 saves.
“I was very pleased with our effort today–I thought it was a real team effort,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach, said. “Our key focus in practice has been our work ethic, and I feel that we carried that over to the ice. We executed our systems well. Scoring the first goal was very important, and that will be our goal this season. Developing our confidence at this point in the season also is very important and I feel that we did that today.”
The Buckeyes open the regular season at 2:05 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15 when they face off against in-state rival Findlay at the OSU Ice Arena. Score By Period
