COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Western Collegiate Hockey Association-Women’s League today announced it has named Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) Player of the Week and Kelli Halcisak (Fr, Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Oct. 22.
Frost recorded four points over the weekend as Ohio State split its two-game series against defending national champion, No. 2 Minnesota at Mariucci Arena. The sophomore assisted on both Buckeye goals in OSU’s 6-2 loss to the Gophers Saturday. Her two goals Sunday, including the gamewinner, helped the Buckeyes to a 4-2 upset victory and their first win over Minnesota. For her outstanding play Sunday, Frost was named the first star of the game.
“Shana played very well all weekend,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach, said. “She was a major presence on the forecheck and an integral part of the power-play and penalty-kill units. The one thing I would stress about Shana this weekend is how hard she worked. So far she has really made things happen for us offensively.”
Frost’s four points this weekend were her first of the season. She placed second on the team in scoring in its inaugural season last year with 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points.
Halcisak also tallied four points against Minnesota. She assisted on the first goal of the game in OSU’s 6-2 loss Saturday and scored her first collegiate goal and added two assists Sunday. Her goal tied the game at one in the first period and her first assist set up Frost’s gamewinner in the second period.
“Kelli made a major defensive contribution this weekend and played a very solid two-game series,” Barto said. “She made good choices with the puck and created offensive opportunities out of her defensive play. It is great to see such impressive offensive play from a rookie defender.”
Halcisak, who was named the second star of the game Sunday, currently leads the team in total points (6) from one goal and five assists. OSU will be back in action at home this weekend for a two-game series. The Buckeyes face off against the New Hampshire Wildcats at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at the OSU Ice Arena.
