Women’s Hockey Defeats Defending National Champion, Minnesota, 4-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–Behind outstanding offensive play, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team defeated defending national champion, No. 2 Minnesota, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Mariucci Arena. With their first win ever over the Gophers, the Buckeyes improve to 2-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the WCHA and UM slips to 3-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the WCHA. Shana Frost (So., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) had a two-goal game and Kelli Halcisak (Fr., Grosse Isle, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) added a goal and two assists.
UM left wing Ambria Thomas put the Gophers on the board early with her fifth goal of the season from Laura Slominski and La Toya Clarke at 1:27 in the first period. Halcisak registered her first career goal at the 14:51 mark and tied the game at one. Assists went to Jeanne Chapple (Fr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) and Carrie Gill (So., Rochester, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary’s).
Frost scored her first goal of the season at 5:48 in the second period from Halcisak and Lindsey Steblen (So., Clayton, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Central). The Buckeyes extended their lead to 3-1 at 14:37 when Rosen scored the gamewinner–her third goal of the season.
At 5:20 in the third period, Frost scored her second of the game, a power-play goal, from Halcisak and Rosen. Halcisak currently leads the team in scoring with one goal and five assists for six points. UM’s Ronda Curtin scored at 15:39 from La Toya Clarke and Gwen Anderson, but it was too little too late for the Gophers.
OSU converted 1-of-4 power-play opportunities and UM went 0 for 2.
The Buckeyes outshot the Gophers, 23-15. OSU goalie April Stojak (So., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s) recorded 14 saves for the win. UM split time between two goalies. Erica Killewald played 34:27 and stopped 12 Buckeye shots. Freshman Stephanie Johnson tallied 7 saves for the Gophers.
Ohio State returns to action at home this weekend for a two-game series. The Buckeyes battle the New Hampshire Wildcats at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 and 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.
