COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State women’s volleyball team needed only 65 minutes to defeat Indiana (12-8 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) with a three-game sweep (15-6, 15-1, 15-8). Ohio State (18-2, 8-2) hit .471 for the match as five starters hit .400 or above. OSU’s Shelly Draeger (So., Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored a match-high 14 kills (.500) with Suzie Stiling (So., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) adding 12 (.550). IU’s Hillary Toivonen had a team-high nine kills for the Hoosiers with Amanda Welter adding seven.
Ohio State opened a 6-1 lead in game one with kills by Sue Calligaris (So., Palermo, Italy/Liceo Linguistico), Dana Stearns (Sr., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley), Stiling and Draeger and two IU errors. Indiana cut the lead to 6-5 with a kill by Melissa Brewer, and OSU error, a block by Brewer and Laurie Gardner, an ace serve by Crecia Keithley and a kill by Toivonen. Ohio State countered with five straight points off a block by Stiling and Katie Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis), two ace serves by Draeger and two kills by Anne Botica (Jr., Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph). Another Botica kill and an IU error put the lead at 13-5 before an IU kill by Monique Pritz made it 13-6. An IU error and a dig by Nikki Cisco (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) that traveled over the net and fell in for a kill ended the game at 15-6. Ohio State hit .379 for the game to .108 for Indiana.
An ace serve by Draeger and a kill by Virtue gave OSU a 2-0 lead in game two. The Buckeyes then put together eight consecutive points to open a 10-0 lead. The run contained four IU errors and a kill by Stearns and two by Botica and a block by Stearns and Botica. An OSU error put IU on the board at 10-1. Three kills by Stiling, one by Draeger and a solo block by Stiling closed out the game at 15-1. The Buckeyes hit .632 for the game to .000 for the Hoosiers. A Calligaris kill, an ace by Stearns and an error by Indiana opened a 3-0 lead for Ohio state in game three. Gardner’s ace cut the lead to 3-1 but a Stiling kill made it 4-1. A Buckeye error made it 4-2. Kills by Stearns and Calligaris made it 6-2. A Toivonen kill cut the OSU lead to 6-3. Two kills by Stiling, one by Draeger and an IU error gave OSU a 10-3 lead. An ace by Toivonen made it 10-4 but an IU error put OSU ahead 11-4. An IU error expanded the lead to 12-4. Two Toivonen kills, an OSU error and a solo block by Gardner closed the lead to 12-8. Two kills by Draeger and an ace serve by Calligaris for match point closed the game at 15-8. OSU hit .462 for the game to .235 for Indiana.
Ohio State hit .471 for the match to IU’s .119. OSU’s .471 hitting percentage is the best mark of the season for Ohio State and ranks ninth in OSU team records. OSU had a 48-28 advantage in kills and a 52-32 margin in digs. The Buckeyes outblocked Indiana six to two and have a five to three edge in ace serves. OSU’s Calligaris had a match high 14 kills with Botica adding 13. Draeger had a match-high three ace serves which marks the fourth time this season she has connected for three aces in a match.
Ohio State begins the second half of the Big Ten season with a road trip to Illinois Friday, Oct. 27 and Purdue Saturday, Oct. 28.
