COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s tennis team sent three players to the Penn Invitational at Philadelphia, Pa. Friday and gained valuable experience in the process.
Jonathon Scale (So., Acworth, Ga./Harrison), Martin Johannson (Jr., Malmo, Sweden/Physical Education) and Ben Kirksey (Fr., Canton, Ohio/McKinley) competed in the singles portion of the tournament while Scale and Johannson teamed together in doubles play.
Scale fell from the tournament in the quarterfinals when he was defeated, 6-5 (2), 2-6, 6-3, by No. 1 seed Oscar Chow of Columbia. Scale made it to the quarterfinals by defeating Penn’s Jared Corby, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and Penn’s Rob Pringle, 4-6, 6-5 (7), 6-1, in the second round.
Kirksey fell in the second round to Columbia’s Pavle Jefferson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, after defeating Penn’s Kevin Stenise, 6-1, 6-4, in the first round.
Johannson fell in his opening match to William Lee of Harvard, 6-5 (7), 6-4.
Scale and Johannson, the No. 4 seed, opened doubles play with an 8-3 defeat of Penn State’s Damon Accardi and Matt Nielson before falling in the second round to Harvard’s Chiou and Lee, 8-6.
“I think all three of them played well and learned more about their games,” David Schilling, assistant coach for OSU, said. “Though they lost, they have nothing to hang their heads about.”
OSU will return to action Friday at Madison, Wis. in the ITA Region-IV Championships.
