COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (6-1), ranked 18th in the USA TODAY/AVCA Coaches Poll and 15th by Volleyball Magazine this week, opens Big Ten Conference play this weekend with matches at No. 20/18 Michigan (7-1) Friday, Sept. 24 and at Michigan State (10-2) Saturday, Sept. 25. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.%^$
The Buckeyes have won four consecutive matches, including the last three in 3-0 sweeps. OSU won at Pittsburgh (15-0, 15-5, 15-10) Wednesday and defeated Boise State (15-4, 15-5, 15-5) Friday and Temple (15-7, 15-7, 15-9) Sunday in St. John Arena%^$
LOOKING AT THE BUCKEYES%^$
Rosie Snow leads the Ohio State offense with 100 kills and a 4.17 kills per game average. She also tops the team in digs with 57 for a 2.38 per game average. Dana Stearns is the team’s top percentage hitter with a .372 average. Jen Flynn is second at .343. Flynn also has a team-high eight ace serves with Katie Virtue and Snow with seven each. Virtue has a 13.76 assist per game average on 289 sets. Sue Calligaris has a team best .89 blocks per game average on 17 blocks (1-16), while Stearns has a team high 18 blocks (2-16) for a .78 per game average.%^$
Team statistics show Ohio State hitting .284 and averaging 17.83 kills per game. OSU has a 1.92 blocks, 13.38 digs and 1.75 aces per game average. Buckeye opponents are hitting .167 and average 13.13 kills per game. Opponents are averaging 1.73 blocks, 10.75 digs and 0.79 aces per game.%^$
KILL STREAK AT 28 FOR SNOW%^$
With 13 kills against Pittsburgh, 14 against Boise State and 10 against Temple, Rosie Snow has extended her consecutive double-figure kill matches to 28. The streak includes the last 21 matches from last season. The 37 kills puts her at 940 for her career where she ranks 12th on the OSU career list. She needs 39 kills to move past 11th-ranked Lisa Vitali (1986-89) at 978.%^$
VIRTUE SETS THREE WINS%^$
Freshman setter Katie Virtue ran the show for the three wins last week. She averaged 14.78 assists per game in the nine games played. She also collected 13 kills and hit .619 (13-0-21) for the week. Virtue also helped out defensively with eight digs and eight (1-7) total blocks.%^$
VIRTUE BIG TEN ASSIST LEADER%^$
In Big Ten statistics for the non-conference season, OSU’s Katie Virtue tops the league’s setters with a 13.76 assist per game average. She has 289 assists in 21 games and has started the last five matches for the Buckeyes.%^$
FLYNN CONTINUES TO PRODUCE%^$
Jen Flynn has stepped into her new/old role as an outside hitter without missing a beat. In three matches last week, she had 28 kills (3.11 per game) and hit .396 including a season-high .500 (13-2-22) against Temple. Flynn also had 19 digs (2.11) and three aces in the last three matches.%^$
CALLIGARIS PRODUCES BLOCK NUMBERS%^$
Sue Calligaris put up the big block last week for the Buckeyes. Despite only one assist block at Pittsburgh (as a non-starter), in her starts against Boise State and Temple she had a career-high six assist blocks in each match. Offensively, Calligaris had 19 kills for the week and hit .467. This includes a six of seven attack performance against Temple for a .857 hitting efficiency.%^$
DRAEGER WITH SEVEN STARTS%^$
Freshman Shelly Draeger is the only freshman to start all seven matches this season. She has a 2.62 kills and 1.57 digs per game average. She set career-highs of 16 kills and 11 digs at Loyola Marymount.%^$
SPIERS DOING WHAT SHE CAN%^$
Fifth-year senior Brianne Spiers has seen action in all seven matches this season, but in the back row. A back injury from last season will limit her play to the defensive specialist position this season. She is averaging 1.13 digs per game and has scored on two ace serves. She had a season-high six digs against Temple.%^$
BUCKEYES HAVE 15-0 GAME%^$
In game one at Pittsburgh, Ohio State won 15-0. It marked the first time since early in the 1997 season that the Buckeyes registered a 15-0 win. It came in game two against Tennessee at the Arby’s Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. OSU had gone 60 matches between game shutouts.%^$
TEAM HITTING NUMBERS%^$
Ohio State has hit .424 or better twice this season. OSU hit .424 at Dayton and .429 at Pittsburgh. Loyola Marymount has a team-best .294 for Buckeye opponents. In five of the six other matches this season, opponents have hit .146 or less.%^$
INJURY REPORT%^$
Laura Stalling is the only player who currently is unavailable this week because of an injury. Stalling suffered an ankle injury in practice prior to the beginning of the season and has seen no action.%^$
OSU FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL%^$
In a vote of the Big Ten coaches, Ohio State tied for fourth (with Indiana) in the annual Big Ten Preseason Poll 10 points behind third-place Illinois. Penn State was a unanimous choice for first with 121 points collecting all 11 first place votes. Wisconsin was second with 107.%^$
FLYNN AND STEARNS PRESEASON PICKS%^$
OSU’s Jen Flynn and Dana Stearns were named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Volleyball team by a vote of the league coaches. Flynn was one of two setters named to the squad. She averaged 12.69 assists last season in conference play. Stearns hit .233 in league action and averaged 3.34 kills, .94 blocks and .36 aces per game.%^$
THE BIG TEN IN 1998%^$
The 1998 season saw Penn State run the table finishing a perfect 20-0 in conference play. Wisconsin finished second (17-3), Michigan State third (15-5) and Illinois fourth (13-7). Ohio State and Indiana finished in a tie for fifth with 9-11 records.%^$
Ohio State placed outside hitter Rosie Snow on the 12-player All-Big Ten team for the 1998 season. Player of the Year honors went to Bonnie Bremner of Penn State while Sherisa Livingston of Wisconsin was named the Freshman of the Year. Penn State coach Russ Rose was named the Big Ten Coach of the year.%^$

In the USA TODAY/AVCA coaches poll, the Buckeyes are tied for 18th this week. OSU has been ranked in the final USA TODAY/AVCA Poll for the last 10 years. The Buckeyes are ranked 15th in this week’s Volleyball Magazine poll.%^$
HEAD COACH JIM STONE%^$
Jim Stone is in his 18th year at Ohio State. He has a 387-170 (.695) record with the Buckeyes and is 219-89 (.711) in Big Ten play. His squads have won Big Ten championships in 1989, 1991 and 1994 and in the last 10 years has only finished below third once. In the championship years, he was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year and in 1991 was the Volleyball Monthly Coach of the Year. For the last 10 years, OSU has participated in the NCAA Championships, advancing to the national semifinals in 1991 and 1994. Stone’s coaching career record includes three years at Wyoming (1979-1981). His 21-year career record is 437-212 (.673).%^$
THE DEAN OF THE BIG TEN COACHES%^$
Head coach Jim Stone begins his 18th-year in the Big Ten at Ohio State. Closest to Stone is Mike Hebert of Minnesota who is entering his 17th season. He spent 14 year at Illinois and the last three at Minnesota.%^$
TELEVISION COVERAGE%^$
The Buckeyes are scheduled for eight televised matches this season. OSU’s Nov. 5 match at Illinois will be carried by ESPN2. Broadcast of the match will be Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. Eastern. Ohio State also will take part in the Fox Sports Chicago Big Ten package. OSU’s match against Michigan Nov. 14 will be broadcast at 5 p.m. Eastern that day.%^$
Ohio State also will have six matches carried by local cable. Insight Communications will broadcast by tape delay the Temple match on Sept. 21 and 22, Illinois on Oct. 5 and 6, Iowa Oct. 24 and 26, Penn State on Oct. 28 and 29, Michigan State on Nov. 13 and 14, Wisconsin on Nov. 28 and 29. The matches will be replayed at 7 p.m. on Insight Communications (Ch. 36) and Time Warner (Ch. 24).%^$
OSU SWEEPS PITTSBURGH IN THREE%^$
Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns each had 13 kills and Jen Flynn added 10 and 11 digs as Ohio State defeated Pittsburgh 15-0, 15-5, 15-10. Flynn, playing in her hometown, also picked up three ace serves in the match and hit .438. Stearns hit a season-high .588 for the Buckeyes. The sixty-six minute match saw the Buckeyes hit a season-high .429 hitting percentage. OSU blanked Pitt in game one, the first 15-0 OSU game since the Tennessee match early in the 1997 season. %^$
Pittsburgh hit .145 for the match to the .429 for OSU. The Buckeyes had a 42-14 advantage in digs and a seven to one margin in ace serves. The Panthers did outblock OSU, five to two.%^$
OSU DOWNS BOISE STATE 3-0%^$
Behind a 14-kill performance by Rosie Snow, OSU defeated Boise State 15-4, 15-5, 15-5 in the Buckeyes’ home opener. It marked her 27th-consecutive match in double-figure kills. Sue Calligaris and Shelly Draeger each contributed eight kills in the win that saw OSU hit .298 as a team to .027 for the Broncos. Snow added a team high nine digs and Calligaris had a career-best six assist blocks. Setter Katie Virtue had 43 assists in the match adding six kills and four total blocks (1-3)%^$
OSU sweep the team stats outhitting Boise State .298 to .027 and have a 55 to 31 advance in kills. The Buckeyes had the edge in blocks, nine to seven, digs, 43-42, and outserved the Broncos five to none.%^$
BUCKEYES DEFEAT TEMPLE 3-0%^$
Behind a match-high 13 kills by Jen Flynn and 10 each from Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns, Ohio State defeated Temple 15-7, 15-7, 15-9 to complete pre-conference play. Snow also had a co-match-high of 12 digs extended her double-figure kill streak to 28 matches. Owl Karla Jones had 11 kills and 12 digs for Temple. OSU’s Sue Calligaris had her second-consecutive match with a career-high six assist blocks. She also had six kills in seven attempts for a .857 hitting percentage.%^$
The Buckeyes outhit Temple .333 to .105. OSU also had the advantage in blocks, nine to three and in digs, 38-30. The Owls outserved Ohio State four to three.%^$
NEW LOOK FLOOR AT ST. JOHN ARENA%^$
After 42 years of having a basketball floor painted on the floor of St. John Arena, a new look greets the 1999 season of volleyball. Earlier this year, the floor of St. John Arena was sanded down to removed the basketball court markings. In its place is a painted volleyball court for use by the women’s and men’s teams.%^$
BUCKEYES MAKE THE GRADE%^$
Ohio State had four student-athletes honored by the Big Ten for their academic standing. Angelee Abbring, Jen Flynn, Laura Stalling and Dana Stearns were honored as Academic All-Big Ten selections. In addition, six players were honored as Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Award Winners. Included with the four players listed above were freshmen Erin Baker and Carey Cavanaugh.%^$
NATIONAL TEAM CONNECTION%^$
Former Buckeye Laura Davis (1991-94) continues in volleyball as a member of the United States National team. She plays the libero position, a back-row only player. Davis, a two-time All-American, was the 1994 National Player of the Year. Jenny Jackson (1992-95), a member of the national team for the past several years left the team earlier this year to pursue a career in engineering. Jackson was a 1994 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten selection.%^$
IN THE PROFESSIONAL RANKS%^$
Two former OSU players, Tricia Stragliotto (1993-95) and Vanessa Wouters (1996-97) are currently playing professionally in Europe. Stragliotto, a 1995 All-American and a three-time All-Big Ten pick is playing in Italy while Wouters, a 1995 All-American and the Big Ten Player of the Year is playing in Germany.%^$
HOLLY O’LEARY ENTERS HALL OF FAME%^$
Former Buckeye Holly O’Leary (1987-90) of Cincinnati, Ohio was inducted into the Ohio State Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 10. A two-time all-American, O’Leary was the 1989 Big Ten Player of the Year and helped OSU win the 1989 Big Ten Championship. She will join former players Mary Ormsby (1977-80), Lisa Bettio (1982-85) and Karen Alsbrooks (1976-79) in the Hall of Fame.%^$
NCAA HISTORY%^$
Ohio State has appeared in 10-consecutive NCAA Championships. The Buckeyes have advanced to the regional level seven times and twice (1991 and 1994) has reached the national semifinals. Overall the Buckeyes have a 13-10 (.565) record in NCAA play. OSU’s trips to the national semifinals included regional championship wins over Nebraska and Long Beach State on their courts.%^$

The Wolverines are 7-1 overall and have won its last three matches over Arkansas (3-1), South Carolina (3-2) and Virginia (3-0). Offensively Nicole Kacor is averaging 4.15 kills per game on 112 kills. She also has a team-high 102 digs for a 3.78 average. Joanna Fielder is second in kills at 3.33 (90). She also has team-highs of 10 aces and 24 (2-22) blocks. Ann Poglits is second in blocks with 22 (0-22). Running the offense is Shannon Melka. She is averaging 11.96 assists per game.%^$
Michigan is hitting .243 and is averaging 15.70 kills per game. The Wolverines average 2.33 blocks, 15.41 digs and 1.67 aces per game. Opponents are hitting .178 and average 15.52 kills per game. They average 2.15 blocks, 15.19 digs and 1.74 aces per game.%^$
THE MICHIGAN SERIES%^$
Ohio State leads the series 36-5. The Buckeyes have a two-match winning streak and have won 22 of the last 23 and 32 of the last 34 matches. In Ann Arbor, OSU have won 15 of 17 matches, losing 1-3 in 1997 (9-15, 15-5, 12-15, 13-15) and in 2-3 in 1987 (15-12, 10-15, 11-15, 15-3, 0-15).%^$
A LOOK AT MICHIGAN STATE%^$
The Spartans are 10-2 overall and have won its last eight matches. MSU won four matches over the weekend defeating DePaul, Niagara and Western Michigan by 3-0 counts and Loyola 3-1. Jessica Sanborn and Sarah Gustin are the main attackers for MSU. Sanborn has 152 kills (4.00 kills per game) and is the team’s top percentage hitter at .461. Gustin has 144 (3.79). Christie Landry runs the Spartan offense and has 407 assists (12.72 per game). She has a team-high 14 aces. Defensively, Gustin has a team-high 86 digs (2.26) and Maren Witzel is second with 80 (2.42). At the net, Angela Morley has a team-best 49 blocks (11-38) for 1.29 per game.%^$
Michigan State is hitting .311 on the season and is averaging 15.43 kills per game. MSU averages 2.67 blocks, 13.27 digs and 1.80 aces per game. Spartan opponents are hitting .157 and average 12.52 kills per game. Opponents average 1.42 blocks, 11.98 digs and 1.33 aces per game.%^$
THE MICHIGAN STATE SERIES%^$
Ohio State has a 29-16 lead in the series with the Spartans. Currently MSU has a two-match winning streak over OSU. In East Lansing, the Buckeyes have won 10 of 19 matches, but have lost three of the last four.%^$
