Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State senior co-captain Ahmed Plummer, as good an example of the term great student-athlete as one will ever find, has today been named a first-team Academic All-American. GTE sponsors the Academic All-America football team and it is voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Plummer, who carries a 3.48 grade point average and is majoring in human resources, is the 24th Buckeye to earn first team All-America honors and the first since Greg Bellisari earned back-to-back awards in 1995 and 1996. Ohio State players have been honored a total of 30 times as first-team Academic All-Americans.
Plummer is currently in New York accepting an $18,000 National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholarship. The 1999 Preseason All-American recently capped a senior season by being named first-team All-Big Ten Conference. He also was named a third-team All-American by the Football News and he was a semifinalist for the prestigious Thorpe Award in 1999, given to the nation’s outstanding defensive back.
The Wyoming, Ohio native and Wyoming H.S. graduate finished the 1999 season leading all Buckeyes with five interceptions and nine pass break-ups, and he totaled 55 tackles. He completes his career with the sixth-highest interception total in school history – 14 – and he had 34 pass break-ups and 168 career tackles. He played in 47 games, started 37 and helped the Buckeyes to a record of 38-11, to two No. 2 national finishes and to wins in the 1997 Rose Bowl and 1999 Sugar Bowl.
Plummer, who married his college sweetheart – Tiffany Cherry – this summer, is a three-time GTE/CoSIDA District IV Academic All-American, a three-time Academic all-Big Ten Conference selection, and a four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
