Redd, Buckeyes lead Big Ten teams in free throw shooting
Ohio State junior Michael Redd connected on all eight of his free throws in the win over Vermont and both attempts vs. Notre Dame. He leads all Big Ten players from the foul line with a perfect shooting percentage. Redd has made eight or more charity tosses nine times in his career but has never been perfect from the line in a game with more than one attempt. He is a career 62 percent foul shooter (275-441). As a team, the Buckeyes are shooting 78 percent (25-32) from the line this season, also best in the Big Ten. Redd and senior Scoonie Penn are a combined 14 of 15 from the free-throw line.
Ohio State notches first win vs. Vermont
Vermont found itself trailing No. 15 Ohio State by just four with 15 minutes remaining. Then Ohio State junior guard Michael Redd started making some shots. With Redd scoring nine of his 19 points in a 17-2 second-half run, the Buckeyes rolled to a 74-51 victory. Vermont (0-4) hit seven of its first nine shots of the second half to pull within four, with Tony Orciari scoring 10 of the points in the 18-9 surge. However, Redd scored the next seven points for the Buckeyes, starting the streak with a 3-pointer from the left wing. The pressure defense by Ohio State (1-1), playing its first game in 13 days, forced the Catamounts to miss 12 consecutive shots from the field as the Buckeyes built a 61-42 lead. Vermont scored only 11 points in the final 13 minutes. Redd topped the Buckeyes with 19 points, while Scoonie Penn had 18 and Ken Johnson finished with 12 points. Johnson added five blocked shots and six rebounds. The Buckeyes hit 26-of-53 shots from the field, with Penn and Redd combining to go 12-of 27. Redd hit his last three attempts. Orciari scored 16 points and Tobe Carberry had 10 for the Catamounts, who have already lost to a pair of teams in last year’s Final Four. They opened their season with an 89-52 loss at national champion Connecticut. Vermont, playing before its largest crowd ever, made just four of its last 24 shots from the field. The crowd of 19,100 at Value City Arena was big enough to make it the second-largest city in Vermont. Prior to the game, a banner commemorating Ohio State’s trip to the Final Four last spring was raised to the rafters in the arena by 1998 co-captains Neshaun Coleman and Jason Singleton.
Home Sweet Home
Ohio State will play nine of its first 10 games at home, including 7 of 8 contests in December. The only road trip before Big Ten play begins Jan. 6 on the road at Illinois is a matchup at Kansas Dec. 16.

OSU also controlled the ball well committing just nine turnovers.
Penn’s three 3-pointers moved him past Damon Stringer into seventh place on the all-time 3-point field goals made list. Penn now has 91 career 3-pointers at Ohio State.
Penn tied his OSU-best with six steals, tying his previous best, set last year vs. Indiana (1/9/99). Penn’s career best is eight, set vs. Pittsburgh during his sophomore season at Boston College.
Freshman Brent Darby scored his first collegiate points in the contest, drilling two free throws in the first half. Sophomore Doylan Robinson earned his first minutes as a Buckeye, making his first appearance in the second half.
Ken Johnson blocked five shots in the game, giving him 10 this season. He holds fourth place on the all-time list with 168, one behind third-place Jim Smith’s 169. Johnson had a fine all-around game, tallying 12 points and six rebounds in a team-high 36 minutes of action, committing just one personal foul.
Michael Redd tallied 19 points vs. Vermont, his 20th-consecutive double figure scoring game. He has reached double figures in 66 of his 68 career games. The last time Redd failed to break into double figures was Jan. 16, 1999, at Michigan when he tallied eight points.

The banner was raised by 1998-99 captains Neshaun Coleman and Jason Singleton.

Penn along with OSU junior Michael Redd (Columbus, Ohio/West) were both selected as first team all-conference members by both the media and coaches.
The coaches also added Cleaves and Morris Peterson of Michigan State to the first team along with A.J. Guyton of Indiana. The media selected a similar first team but replaced Guyton with Cory Bradford of Illinois. League coaches picked Michigan State to win the conference this year followed by Ohio State, Illinois, Purdue and Indiana. The media picked MSU, Ohio State and Illinois as its top three.
