COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes were a little sluggish on the practice fields during the first two practice sessions today, their last day of three-a-days. The tremendous thunderstorm that passed through Columbus this afternoon kept the Buckeyes indoors in the steamy confines of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for the evening practice. “The guys know that there is a scrimmage tomorrow,” said head coach John Cooper, “and they want to be ready to play.” The scrimmage at Ohio Stadium won’t be a full scale scrimmage, but rather a scrimmage of situations. Cooper indicated that there was still plenty of players to evaluate. He also indicated that camp has gone like expected, although this year the coaches have had more numbers to work with.
%^$Ken-Yon Rambo Goes Down
%^$No new information on Ken-Yon Rambo’s situation. The sophomore Rambo suffered a sprained right ankle on Monday and was wearing a brace and on crutches during Tuesday’s practices. Coach John Cooper felt that it was doubtful the speedy flanker would be ready for the Buckeyes’ game against West Virginia in 11 days.
%^$Joe Brown Update
%^$Joe Brown’s surgery today to repair a broken right thumb was a complete success, according to head trainer Bill Davis. The status for the West Virginia game for the 6-6, 285-pound sophomore defensive tackle will be determined at a later date.
%^$Head Coach John Cooper “Quotes”
%^$On QB Joe Germaine: “There is no change in his demeanor now that he is the starting quarterback. He still works hard. He is very confident knowing that he is ‘the man.'”
%^$On fatigue: “It isn’t time to wind down just yet. We’ll have a morning practice and a scrimmage Wednesday and then two more practices on Thursday before we break camp. From that point on you will start to see drastic improvement in our team. The players will be quick on opening night. If we haven’t fatigued them yet, then we haven’t been doing our job.”
%^$On team weaknesses: “We have no weaknesses. No…our offensive line is a concern. Tam Hopkins and Henry Fleming need work. Rob Murphy hasn’t been out at all. But on the flip side, guys like Tyson Walter, Ben Gilbert, Kurt Murphy and Brooks Burris have been there every day for us.”
%^$On the Ohio State linebackers: “I like our linebackers.”
%^$On defensive line depth: “We have depth, but the guys are all pups. There are lots of young guys along the line but some have played very little and some none at all.”
%^$Sr. LB Jerry Rudzinski “Quotes”
%^$On the WVU Crowd: %^$On practice preparations: “Our own personnel will get us ready. The guys we practice against everyday in practice are some of the best in the country.”
%^$On No. 1 pressure: “I don’t think the pressure has gotten to us at all. Maybe down the road it might. We just sit in the meetings with our coaches and sometimes it seems like we are not even a ranked team. The coaches bring us down to earth and keep things realistic. If we are number one right now it doesn’t mean a whole lot. The ranking will mean more at the end of the road.”
