COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes worked through their second day in full pads with no new injuries to report. All-America left guard Rob Murphy was the only noticeable player not in pads. The junior has a lower back injury and is expected to be out of action until at least this Monday. The offensive line is still light in terms of numbers, with the losses of Jefferson Kelly (medical red-shirt), Jim Massey (lower back surgery) and Drew Elford (sprained right ankle), but a lighter Henry Fleming – this due to weight loss caused by a stomach ailment that had limited his first few days of practice – had a spirited afternoon workout which was pleasing to see. %^$

Coach John Cooper “Quotes” – Aug. 20, 1998

%^$On Jr. DE James Cotton: “James Cotton looks good…or else the offensive tackle looks bad. But he is a football player. He will help us. He has a great attitude, he’s in great condition and he is a real hard working young man.” %^$
%^$On the Offensive Line: “I think it is getting better. Of course, we haven’t blocked anybody like Wadsworth [Florida State’s Andre], you know. But James Cotton is probably as close to that as anybody we have on this football team. That guy was a great player.” %^$
%^$On No. 1: “Nothing has changed. There is no difference attitude wise. These players have great attitude, great work ethics and great chemistry. You can’t improve on that. When you play football at Ohio State and coach at Ohio State you are expected to win every ball game you play. The fact we are rated No. 1 or five or ten or whatever doesn’t change the attitude of the football squad.” %^$
%^$On a West Virginia game plan: “Not yet. Not at this time. You stop Amos Zereoue and they have two great wide receivers [David Saunders and Shawn Foreman have 115 and 106 career receptions, respectively]. They are like us. You can’t gang up on them. You just have to play base defense and hope you’re good enough to stand up.” %^$
%^$On RBs Joe, Jerry & Jonathan: “Both of those guys have been impressive and I would put Jonathan Wells in that same boat. When one guy gets hurt somebody else has got to step up and take up the slack. With Michael Wiley out [yesterday] and Derrick Combs out, obviously those other guys are going to get more reps. Joe Montgomery has had a real good fall camp and Jerry Westbrook’s is a big kid who can play.”
