COLUMBUS, Ohio – Fueled by an NCAA Final Four appearance by the hockey team, The Ohio State University moved into a tie for 15th place in the Sears Directors’ Cup standings. Buckeye athletic teams have accumulated 240 points in the Sears Cup standings thus far, and are tied with Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Texas for the 15th spot on the list honoring the nation’s elite athletic programs.
Ohio State teams earned points for exceptional national finishes in men’s hockey (3rd place – 60 points), women’s gymnastics (13th – 30), men’s gymnastics (6th – 20), fencing (11th – 20), women’s swimming (26th – 20), men’s swimming (20th – 20), and wrestling (23rd – 20). Ohio State finished tied for eighth in last year’s Sears Cup standings.
The Sears Director’s Cup, awarded by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Sears Roebuck and Company, is the only all-sport trophy awarded to four-year NCAA Division I institutions. Standings for each Cup are based on 64-team brackets. Teams finishing in first place in a NACDA-recognized championship or poll receive 64 points, second place 63, and so on. Division I standings are figured using the institution’s top 22 team finishes. Of the 22 team sports counted, 18 are core sports (nine women’s, nine men’s) and four are wild card sports (two women’s, two men’s).
Stanford University, last year’s champion, currently leads the Sears Cup standings with 760 points. Spring sports are also figured into the rankings, and 1998’s final winner will be released this summer.
