Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State University’s Michael Redd has been named to Basketball Weekly’s All-Freshman first-team. The Columbus native and West High School graduate, named earlier as the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, is part of a talented all-freshman squad that includes Freshman of the Year Larry Hughes of Saint Louis, Baron Davis of UCLA, Khalid El-Amin of Connecticut and Tony Harris of Tennessee. All five are guards.
“The basketball staff is thrilled for Michael,” Buckeye head coach Jim O’Brien said. “We’ve said all along that Michael is not only a very talented individual who is going to develop into a very fine player, but he also works extremely hard at making himself a better player. This is a terrific achievement for Michael.”
Redd, who became the first freshman to ever lead the Big Ten in scoring, averaged 21.8 points (overall; 22.0 in Big Ten games only), 6.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game and he was named third-team all-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media. He was the leading freshman scorer in the country and he ranked 16th overall. In addition to leading the Big Ten in scoring, Redd ranked fifth in steals, eighth in rebounding and 10th in field goal percentage.
