SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Michael Redd scored 28 points and had 12 rebounds as Ohio State (9-2) defeated Alabama-Birmingham (7-4) 71-64 in the first round of the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic. Redd hit 10 of 20 shots from the field, including two-three pointers and added six free throws as the Buckeyes won for the first time this season on the road. Scoonie Penn added 14 points with Jason Singleton scoring 10 and George Reese coming off the bench for 10 points.
Damon Cobb scored a team high 14 points for UAB with Antonio Jackson and Torrey Ward adding 10 each.
Ohio State plays North Carolina State on Tuesday as the tournament continues.
