COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior quarterback Joe Germaine was selected today as one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the nation’s top senior collegiate quarterback. This comes one week after Germaine was named one of 10 top candidates for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the top quarterback in the nation.
The elite list of senior quarterbacks chosen as finalists includes Germaine, Kansas State’s Michael Bishop, Central Florida’s Daunte Culpepper, Syracuse’s Donovan McNabb and UCLA’s Cade McNown.
Germaine has quarterbacked the Buckeyes to a 7-0 start and the No. 1 ranking in the land in both the Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 coaches polls. He has completed 61-percent of his passes (129-210) for 1,863 yards with 14 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He ranks 14th nationally in passing efficiency (first in the Big Ten) and 15th nationally in total offense (second Big Ten).
Germaine is currently working on a consecutive-games string of three straight 300-yard games, the first time that has ever been done at Ohio State. He also has a school record four 300-yard games this season and a school record five for his career.
The winner of the 1998 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award will be announced Nov. 24, with the award presentation to be made in Louisville on Dec. 11.
