COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced its weekly awards on Monday. Senior guard Taylor Mikesell was selected to the honor roll following her performances at No. 18/15 Louisville and at Rutgers. This is the first time of the season that Mikesell has made the weekly honor roll after being named to the list three times last season.
Last week, Mikesell averaged 28.0 points and five three-pointers per game, shooting 22-of-37 (.595) from the floor and 10-of-20 (.500) from long range. At Louisville, Mikesell led all scorers with a (then) season-high 26 points (first to double figures with the opening basket in the second quarter), adding a pair of rebounds and assists on 10-of-16 (.625) shooting. She made 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Mikesell converted on a pair of free throws to tie the game in the third quarter and followed with the basket that gave Ohio State a lead it would not relinquish. This win ended Louisville’s 48-game win streak at home against non-conference opponents.
Mikesell followed with a 30-point performance at Rutgers, her first of the season. She shot 12-of-21 (.571) from the floor and was 6-of-12 (.500) from behind the arc, once again becoming the first player to reach double figures – doing so with her fourth three-pointer when Rutgers had just 10 points as a team early in the second quarter.
Mikesell is the first Buckeye since January to record back-to-back 25+ point games and has three such games on the season. Her and teammate Rebeka Mikulášiková both recording 30+ points in the same game is only the third time in program history this has occurred (previously done in 1979 and 2016). She’s scored in double figures in every game this season and is averaging 19.3 ppg, shooting 50.4 percent from the floor.
