COLUMBUS, Ohio – Georgii Merkulov, a freshman forward on the Ohio State men’s hockey team, has been tabbed Big Ten Third Star of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. The Ryazan, Russia, native had two goals, two assists and four points, along with 18 faceoff wins, against Mercyhurst last weekend.
Merkulov had a goal and an assist in each game vs. the Lakers, ending the weekend +3 with an 18-5 faceoff record. Friday, he had a goal and an assist in the third period, was +1 and 9-4 on faceoffs. Saturday, Merkulov put the Buckeyes ahead 2-1 late in the second period. In the third, he had the primary assist on the gamewinning goal, scored two minutes after Mercyhurst had tied the game. He won 9-of-10 faceoffs, was +2 and blocked a shot.
The two-point outings were the first multi-point games for Merkulov as a Buckeye. He has a 3-7-10 line to share the team point lead and is 74-43 on faceoffs (.632). He has a point in eight of the 11 games he has played this year.
This week, the No. 18 Buckeyes play at No. 8 Notre Dame in a Big Ten series. The teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday with NBCSN televising the game and at 6 p.m. Saturday.
