Men’s Hockey Completes Sweep of Ferris State, 4-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes’ Daymen Bencharski tallied with less than two minutes remaining to give the Ohio State men’s hockey team a 4-3 victory over Ferris State tonight in Value City Arena. Bencharski’s goal, scored on the rebound of an R.J. Umberger shot, was scored just 17 seconds after the Bulldogs had tied the game. Paul Caponigri led the Buckeyes with three points, on two goals and an assist.%^$
%^$The win gives Ohio State a two-game sweep of Ferris State. The Buckeyes improve to 16-12-4 and 11-9-4 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Buckeyes remain in sixth place in the CCHA. The Bulldogs fall to 14-15-1, 11-12-1 in conference play.%^$
%^$The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Jeff Legue and Matt York at 10:22 and 12:44, respectively. FSU maintained its lead until Caponigri took over, scoring two goals just 1:10 apart to tie the game at two. Caponigri deflected Thomas Welsh’s shot past FSU goalie John DeCaro for his first tally of the game, his ninth of the season. On his second goal, Caponigri stole the puck from a Bulldog in the FSU zone and put the puck past DeCaro.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes pushed their lead to 3-1 9:33 into the second stanza, when Umberger scored on a breakaway with the teams skating four aside. Caponigri started the play, as he took the puck from an FSU player in the neutral zone and passed it ahead to Umberger who beat DeCaro five-hole. The goal was Umberger’s team-best 15th of the season.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes maintained their one-goal lead until 17:46 of the third period, when Phil Lewandowski blasted the puck past OSU goalie Mike Betz on the power play to tie the game at three. The Buckeyes responded 17 seconds later, with Bencharski putting in Umberger’s rebound. Eric Skaug also assisted on the play. The Bulldogs pulled DeCaro for the extra skater with 1:10 remaining, but were unable to convert.%^$
%^$For the game, the Buckeyes stopped 6-of-7 Bulldog power-play chances. Ohio State was scoreless on its four chances with the man advantage. Betz stopped 30-of-33 FSU shots for his 16th win of the season. DeCaro made 17 saves in the game.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes return to action Feb. 22-23 when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face the Michigan Wolverines in a two-game CCHA series. The squads will face off at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 in Yost Ice Arena.%^$
