McMahon’s Career-High Leads Ohio State to 82-57 Win Against UAlbany

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3/4 Ohio State Buckeyes (11-0, 2-0 B1G) beat UAlbany (6-7) by an 82-57 margin on Friday on Princess Night inside Value City Arena.
Cotie McMahon got things started quickly with the Buckeyes’ first nine points as OSU led 21-12 after the first quarter. UAlbany responded in the second quarter to take the lead midway through the quarter but OSU led 34-31 at halftime. Ohio State jumpstarted its offense to outscore UAlbany 48-27 in the second half.
How it Happened
Cotie McMahon opened scoring with a three-point play and scored the first nine points for Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes a 9-2 lead with 6:30 to play and forced a UAlbany timeout. The Buckeyes got points from Rikki Harris, Taylor Thierry and Eboni Walker to lead 21-12 after 10 minutes of play.
UAlbany scored the first eight points of the second quarter to trim the Buckeye lead to one at 21-20 and took a 25-24 lead with 6:14 to play in the first half. Taylor Mikesell tied the game at 27 midway through the quarter to begin an 8-0 run for the Buckeyes. Ohio State led 34-31 going into the locker room.
The Buckeyes outscored the Great Danes 25-12 in the third quarter, not allowing more than one-unanswered basket by UAlbany throughout the quarter. Ohio State used a pair of 6-0 runs to lead 59-43 after 30 minutes of play.
OSU used an 11-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to win the quarter 23-14 and the game by an 82-57 margin despite UAlbany scoring the final five points.

- The Buckeye defense has forced at least 20 turnovers in all 11 games this season.
- This is the ninth time this season that Ohio State has totaled at least 10 steals.
- Cotie McMahon was the first in the game to double figures, doing so in the first quarter and recording 10+ points for the fifth time this season. She finished with a career-high 24 points.
- Taylor Mikesell has scored in double figures each of the Buckeyes’ first 11 games, finishing with 13 points.
- Madison Greene reached double figures for the sixth time this season, totaling 11 points.

- Head Coach Kevin McGuff: “I talked to them at halftime and said [UAlbany] is more committed to running good offense than we are committed to stuff. Until that changes, the game is not going to go our way. Second half, we came out with great energy in the press. I think that really kind of rattled [UAlbany] and wore on them. In the half court, we were getting through screens better, we were much more active, we were rebounding better – all of those things.”
- Freshman forward Cotie McMahon: “When I first got here and started playing, I was just attacking and going. I think I’ve been more patient with that to one – have the ability to score off that, and two – be able to look and kick. I feel like tonight I really enforced that with my game and showed it on the floor.”
- Red-shirt junior guard Madison Greene: “[Cotie McMahon] has grown a lot as a player and I’m super proud of her to see how much better she’s gotten. She’s gotten more confident and she continues to stay aggressive, which is what we love to see her do. Her and [Taylor Thierry] are both my favorite players because they’re so aggressive and once you give them the ball, you know they’re going to finish.”

Ohio State travels to the San Diego Invitational next week. The Buckeyes are scheduled to face -/RV South Florida on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. ET tip. OSU will then play either No. 21/22 Arkansas or No. 16/15 Oregon on Wednesday.
