COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Ohio State All-American JJ Wolf picked up where he left off in the majors, as the Cincinnati, Ohio native won his opening round match at the Australian Open on Monday, defeating Jordan Thompson in four sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Wolf advances to the second round to take on No. 23 seed and world No. 25 Diego Schwartzman.
Coming off a strong showing at last year’s final major, where he advanced to the third round, Wolf opened with a strong showing against the Australian Thompson. He recorded 17 aces in the four-set win.
Wolf rose as high as No. 56 in the world following his run at the US Open last August. He currently sits at No. 66 in the world rankings. His win on Monday was his first in a main draw at a major other than the US Open where he has advanced to the third round two times.
