COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior guard Jamie Lewis (Oak Hill, Ohio/Oak Hill High School) has been tabbed the 41st pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics. Coach Tom Maher selected Lewis in the third round.
Maher, a 30-year coaching veteran, was named the Mystics head coach in December. Most recently he served as head coach of the Australian National Team. Other selections by Washington so far today include Georgia guard Coco Miller in the first round and Florida forward and Pickerington, Ohio, native Tamara Stocks in the second round.
Lewis, 5-5, helped guide the Buckeyes to their first postseason title with an MVP performance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Lewis averaged 18.2 ppg and 4.0 rpg and recorded a tournament record 39 assists (7.8 apg) in the five-game stretch.
The Second Team All-Big Ten selection capped her Ohio State career 18th on the scoring ladder, compiling 1,034 points. She is the only Buckeye to distribute more than 600 assists, establishing an OSU career record 643 and single-season mark of 257.
Lewis will be attempting to become the fourth Buckeye to join the women’s professional league behind Ohio State alumnae Katie Smith (Minnesota Lynx), Adrienne Johnson (Orlando Miracle) and Larecha Jones (Charlotte Sting).
Training camps for the WNBA’s fifth season open May 2. The 12-week season begins May 28.
