COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five Ohio State women’s hockey players have been invited to Hockey Canada’s BFL National Women’s Program selection camp, the organization announced Friday. The group includes Jenna Buglioni, Jenn Gardiner, Sophie Jaques, Raygan Kirk and Emma Maltais.

The 11-day camp is set to take place Aug. 3-14 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alba. The camp will bring athletes vying for spots on Canada’s National Women’s Team, Canada’s National Women’s Development Team and Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team as a start to the 2022-23 season and a new four-year Olympic cycle.

Maltais was a member of Canada’s 2021 World Championship team as well as the gold medal Canadian Olympic team this past February after being selected to centralized for her home country in May of 2021.

Buglioni, Gardiner and Kirk have all played at the U18 level for Canada, with Gardiner and Kirk winning gold at the 2019 U18 world championship tournament in Russia and Buglioni winning silver in 2020 in Slovakia.

This year’s invite is the first National Women’s Team camp invite for Buglioni, Gardiner, Jaques and Kirk. The group has previously been invited to the development camps, with Buglioni, Gardiner and Kirk earning invites last summer while Jaques joined Kirk and Maltais at the 2019 camp.

Canada’s National Women’s Team and National Women’s Development Team hopefuls will be split into four teams for practices, intrasquad games and off-ice sessions starting next week. Following the selection of the National Women’s Team, Canada is expected to play Denmark and the United States in a pair of pre-tournament games prior to the start of the women’s worlds.

The 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championships will be contested Aug. 25-Sept. 4 in Denmark. The United States and Canada will play in Herning for the preliminary rounds. Quarterfinals will be contested in both Herning and Frederikshavn before the semi-finals and medal games in Herning.
