COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s gymnast Payton Harris was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Wednesday after a breakout performance in the Buckeyes’ season opener last Sunday.
Harris recorded two 9.900 scores in her collegiate debut as Ohio State defeated Arizona, Greenville and Kentucky. The Franklin, Wis. native earned the event title on beam with a 9.900 and took third overall on floor with her second 9.900, and second in consecutive rotations.
Her beam score is tied for the second best in the Big Ten this season and is tied for the best score by a freshman in the conference. On floor, she tied for the third-best score in the conference.
Harris competed in the all-around for the Buckeyes in the season opener. She finished with an overall score of 38.950. Her performance helped Ohio State to the best season-opening score in program history (196.775) and the 10th best score in the country to start the year.
