Germaine, Rudzinski and Winfield Elected Captains – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Seniors Joe Germaine, Jerry Rudzinski and Antoine Winfield have been selected by a vote of their teammates as captains of the 1998 Ohio State University football team.
%^$“These are three outstanding young men who are leaders on the football field as well as off the field,” 11th-year Ohio State head coach John Cooper said. “All three of these individuals have proven themselves worthy to be captain. It is an honor and a privilege to have your teammates select you as captain, and I think that these three will be outstanding leaders for this team.”
%^$Germaine, a 6-2, 205-pound quarterback from Mesa, Ariz., will be Ohio States starting quarterback after sharing time the past two seasons. He enters Saturdays game at West Virginia sixth on the OSU passing charts with 3,040 yards, and he has thrown 31 touchdown passes. A sport and leisure studies major, Germaine is the OSU career leader in completion percentage with a 58.5-percent accuracy rate. Last year, he finished third nationally in passing efficiency with a 160.4 rating.
%^$Rudzinski is a 6-2, 225-pound linebacker from Centerville, Ohio. A four-time OSU scholar-athlete and Big Ten all-academic team member majoring in finance, Rudzinski is a veteran of 32 games and 14 starting assignments. He has 87 career tackles with nine tackles for lost yards and four quarterback sacks. He started all 13 games last season.
%^$The All-American Winfield is a 5-9, 180-pound cornerback from Akron, Ohio who is majoring in communications. A candidate this year for the Thorpe Award, which goes to the nations outstanding defensive back, Winfield was the first defensive back to ever be named team MVP when his teammates voted him that honor last season. Last year, he led the Buckeyes in tackles with 100. He also had 12 pass break-ups and two interceptions.
