PARK RIDGE, IL – Ohio State quarterback Joe Germaine, the 1998 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year (as selected by Conference coaches), has been named winner of the Chicago Tribune Silver Football, an award bestowed yearly to the Most Valuable Player in the Conference. Each Big Ten head coach and members of the Tribune sports department vote on the award.
Germaine led the 10-1 Buckeyes to a share of the Big Ten championship, a No. 3 national ranking and a second consecutive Sugar Bowl berth. He finished the regular season with 3,108 yards in passing and 24 touchdowns and a 60.4% completion percentage, tops in the League.
The Silver Football has been handed out each year since 1924, when Illinois’ Red Grange won the award. Germaine is the 14th Ohio State player to earn the honor, the most of any of the Conference schools.
