COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nick Feldman and Nic Bouzakis fell short of bronze medal bids Wednesday at the 2022 U20 Junior World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Feldman built an 8-5 lead over Merab Suleimanashvili in the first period of the bronze medal match at 125kg but the Georgian rebounded following a four-point Feldman takedown to pin the incoming Ohio State freshman at the 2:37 mark to earn the medal. Feldman finished fifth in the bracket.
Nic Bouzakis, fell short in his bid to advance to the bronze-medal match, 16-15, to Mykyta Abramov of the Ukraine in the 61kg repechage. Abramov fell to Khamzat Arsamerzouev of France, 5-3, for a bronze.
Feldman defeated Bulgaria’s Georgi Ivanov, a 2022 U20 European silver medalist, in the quarterfinals, 5-1.
In the semifinals, Feldman fell 11-1 to 2021 U17 World champion Amirreza Masoumi Valadi of Iran. Masoumi Valadi earned the gold with a win over Mahendra Gaikwad of India in the finals.
Bouzakis advanced to the quarterfinals following a pair of pins.
Bouzakis won by fall at 1:26 of his first-round battle with Arslan Rakhimov of Uzbekistan and then pinned Abdullah Toprak of Turkey to make the quarters. There, Bouzakis fell short in a back-and-fourth battle with Armin Habibzadehsaroukolaei of Iran, 13-11.
With Habibzadehsaroukolaei winning in the semifinals, Bouzakis was pulled back in to the 61kg bracket. Yuto Nishiuchi of Japan defeated Habibzadehsaroukolaei in the gold medal round.
Buckeye assistant coaches Logan Stieber and J Jaggers also were on hand helping coach Team USA and as personal coaches for both Bouzakis and Feldman.
