Jakub Dobeš, a freshman goaltender on the No. 15 Ohio State men’s hockey team, has been named to the Watch List for the 2022 Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in men’s NCAA Division I hockey since 2014. The Buckeye from Ostrava, Czech Republic, is one of 28 goalies included, and one of six from the Big Ten, as well as one of two true freshmen.
A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare the initial list down to approximately 15 names within the next two weeks and then ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in April during the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four.
Dobeš leads NCAA true freshmen with 15 wins, a .705 winning percentage, a .929 save percentage and a 2.12 goals-against average. Among all goalies, he is in the Top 12 in all four four categories. He has started 21 of the Buckeyes’ 24 games, with 22 appearances.
A Montreal draft pick in 2020, Dobeš has recorded two shutouts and is a two-time Big Ten Star of the Week, as well as the HCA National Rookie of the Month for October.
The Buckeyes take on Michigan State in a two-game Big Ten series this weekend, with puck drop at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. The games will be streamed through B1G Plus and on Ohio State Radio.
