COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has completed his coaching staff with the addition of quarterbacks and receivers coach Joe Daniels.
Daniels, 58, comes to Ohio State from the University of Cincinnati, where this past season he served as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach. He joined the UC staff in 1997 after five years in private business.
A native of Bethel Park, Pa., Daniels graduated from Slippery Rock in 1964 with a degree in physical education. He played running back in college and was a four-year letterman.
Daniels began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at East Stroudsburg in 1966. After two years there, he began a 10-year stint (1968-77) as quarterbacks and receivers coach at Boston College.
In 1978, Daniels moved to West Virginia as quarterbacks coach. After two years in that role, he took over as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980.
Following the 1982 season, Daniels jumped to the pro ranks as receivers coach for the Cleveland Browns. He spent three seasons with the Browns (1983-85) before accepting a similar position with the Buffalo Bills.
After two seasons in Buffalo (1986-87) and a year out of coaching (1988), Daniels returned to the college ranks as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Akron in 1989.
He jumped back to the pros in 1990, however, as quarterbacks coach for the New York Jets, spending three years (1990-92) with that organization before entering private business in 1992.
Daniels returned to the coaching profession in 1997 as running backs coach at the University of Cincinnati. He coached the Bearcats’ wide receivers the next two seasons and was elevated to offensive coordinator and assistant head coach at the start of the 2000 campaign.
“Joe Daniels gives us a veteran coach who has proven himself at every level of coaching” Tressel said. “For us to be able to add a coach with his experience and expertise is a real boost to our staff.” “I really wasn’t looking to move,” Daniels said. “But when you have a chance to work for a guy like Jim Tressel at a school like Ohio State, you had better take it. In my mind, this is one of the great jobs in the country and I am thrilled to be on the staff.”
Daniels and his wife, Kathy, have two children: Matthew (15) and Kaitlin (13).
