
Cantos Siemers Receives B1G Athlete of the Week Accolades

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After posting three wins last weekend, Irina Cantos Siemers of the women’s tennis team has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Cantos Siemers, from Bremerhaven, Germany, notched a singles win and two doubles victories as the No. 7-ranked Buckeyes were 2-0 as a team to improve to 14-4 on the year.
Cantos Siemers, who is No. 7 in the ITA singles rankings, was 1-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles last weekend, helping the Buckeyes remain the only undefeated Big Ten team (7-0). Against Michigan Friday, No. 7-ranked Cantos Siemers defeated No. 118 Clarissa Hand on court one, 7-6 (7), 6-3, saving set points in the first and coming back from 2-5 down in the tiebreaker. Her win clinched the Buckeye victory, with Ohio State up 3-2. She and Lucia Marzal rallied from down 1-4 to win 6-4 on court two vs. Christina Hand and Briana Crowley. At Purdue Sunday, Cantos Siemers was ahead 2-1 in the third set on court one in singles when play was suspended. She and Marzal clinched the doubles point, topping Csilla Fodor and Siera Shimizu on court two, 6-2, winning the final four games.
In singles, Cantos Siemers is 13-3 in dual matches this spring, with a 6-0 mark in B1G play, and is 28-8 overall. She is 20-9 overall in doubles, posting a 6-0 mark in Big Ten dual matches and an 11-5 dual match ledger.
The Buckeyes have now won six Big Ten weekly honors this season, with senior Isabelle Boulais a two-time winner and freshman Sydni Ratliff a three-time selection. Cantos Siemers is now a three-time B1G Athlete of the Week, with two honors in 2021.
This week, Ohio State will play at Minnesota at 4:30 p.m. ET Friday and at Wisconsin at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. The regular season ends with matches at home against Maryland at 6 p.m. April 22 and Rutgers at noon April 24. Admission is free to all regular season home matches and live video and scoring will be available.
