COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lisa Strom, second-year head coach of the Buckeyes, announced Wednesday the addition of Alejandra Cangrejo to the Ohio State Women’s Golf program as an assistant coach.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Alejandra to the Buckeye Family,” Strom said. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from her collegiate and professional playing days. But more importantly, she is a high-character individual who understands the value of developing our student-athletes on-and-off the golf course. She has a magnetic personality and an ability to connect with the individual in front of her. The team is excited to work alongside her as we continue to elevate our program to national championship contention. Alejandra will play an instrumental role in our journey.”
Cangrejo, a native of Bogota, Columbia, played from 2010-14 at Duke University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology/sociology. She was a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and the All-ACC Academic Team from 2011-14.
She has played professionally on the Symetra Tour since 2015, competing in about 20 tournaments per year. Her best finish to date was tied for eighth at the Windsor (Calif.) Golf Classic in 2017.
At Duke, the Blue Devils won the NCAA Championship in 2014 and were runner-up in 2013. Cangrejo helped Duke win the ACC title from 2012-14
“I would like to thank Coach Strom for this incredible opportunity,” Cangrejo said. “She has been a great mentor to me and I’m thrilled to coach such a special group of talented players alongside her. It is a privilege to join this amazing golf program and outstanding athletics department. I’m beyond excited to get to work with the coaches and staff to help the players achieve their full potential on-and-off the course. I feel humbled and honored to be a part of the Buckeye family, and the culture of excellence and greatness that characterizes The Ohio State University.”
Dan Brooks, head women’s golf coach at Duke, said Cangrejo has the background to excel in collegiate coaching.
“Aleja will be an excellent addition to The Ohio State program,” Brooks said. “She’s smart, has a great, calm demeanor, has played at a high level as a college player and professionally. She helped us win a national championship. These experiences will help her immensely as a coach.”
Cangrejo is a certified LPGA teaching professional (level II) with experience teaching at the junior golf level, developing practice plans, analyzing swing efficiency and coaching an individual’s preferences and beliefs to create sustainable long-term success.
