COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State rising senior Vanja Bukilic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, has been selected as of 16 players who will compete with the Serbian National Team as it competes in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Tournament in Italy as preparation for the Olympic Games next month in Tokyo.
“This is such an exciting opportunity for Vanja after a great junior campaign,” said Ohio State head coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg. “To play with some of the best athletes from her country as well as against some of the best players in the world will provide invaluable experience at such a high level. To hear and see the excitement in Vanja’s voice on our FaceTime call is something I’ll never forget. Our entire team will be cheering her on from the US!”
Bukilic was a second-team All-Big Ten selection this past spring for the Buckeyes as the 6-6 opposite hitter was third on the team with an average of 2.72 kills per set and second with 205.5 total points.
“The Serbian volleyball team is one of the best volleyball teams in the world. I remember when I was younger and I watch them play at home and thinking how cool they are, and that I would give anything to be cool like them one day,” said Bukilic. “Every day practice was a motivation in order to play for the best one day. This call to join the team to play in the League of Nations Tournament in Italy was an honor and dream come true.”
The League of National Tournament runs from May 25-June 25 and will be held in Rimini, Italy. Team Serbia begins play on Tuesday, May 25 vs. Turkey. This week, they have two matches schedule: vs. Turkey on Tuesday and Italy on Thursday.
