COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Jenna Buglioni scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Ohio State women’s hockey team opened 2021 with a 4-1 win over Bemidji State on Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus. The Buckeyes are now 3-2 on the season while Bemidji State is 1-3-1.
In addition to Buglioni’s four points, Ohio State also received a goal and an assist from the duo of Jennifer Gardiner and Gabby Rosenthal. Ohio State’s offense erupted for a season-high 46 shots as the Buckeyes opened the game by outshooting the Beavers 22-2 in the first period. The Buckeyes’ defense killed off BSU’s only power play opportunity of the night is now 8-for-8 this season on the penalty kill.
“We got pucks to the net and pucks though [the defense],” said head coach Nadine Muzerall. “We did a great job of scoring twice. They [Bemidji State] challenged us when they got one and we talked after the period about being an elite player – they find a way to score. A lot of compliments go to Jenna Buglioni who as a freshman was our leader tonight. I’m very excited what she’s going to bring for the next four years.”
Buglioni, who became Ohio State’s first multi-goal scorer this season, gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the first period off assists from Rosenthal and Riley Brengman. Two minutes later, the Buckeyes were back on the scoreboard thanks to a Rosenthal goal with assists from Gardiner and Buglioni.
That’s the way the score stayed after the first period as Ohio State’s offense produced 22 shots on goal against just one for the Beavers. In the second period, BSU cut the two-goal deficit to just one when Mak Langei poked a shot past Ohio State goalie Andrea Braendli when seven and a half minutes remaining in the period.
The Buckeyes held their slim one-goal lead early in the third period until Buglioni provided a key insurance goal, scoring off assists from Sophie Jaques and Emma Maltais, with less than five minutes remaining. Bemidji State then pulled it goal at the 1:30 and Ohio State scored an empty net goal by Gardiner with 41 seconds remaining for the final 4-1 tally.
A total of six players finished with at least one point for Ohio State offensively while Braendli stopped 15 of the 16 shots that she faced.
Ohio State and Bemidji State conclude their two-game series tomorrow when the teams square off at 3:07 p.m. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
