Buckeyes Set for Olympic Quarterfinals


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following four games of preliminary round action from the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, all six Ohio State women’s hockey players at the games are moving on to the quarterfinals. The contingent of Buckeyes at this year’s Winter Olympics include Andrea Braendli (Switzerland), Jincy Dunne (United States), Sofie Lundin (Sweden), Emma Maltais (Canada), Natalie Spooner (Canada) and Minttu Tuominen (Finland).

Team Canada

Natalie Spooner, Emma Maltais and Team Canada advance in the Olympic tournament after going undefeated in group play. Spooner leads the field with 11 points on a tournament-high nine assists and an additional two goals in four games. Emma Maltais added her first Olympic point in the Canadian’s game against Finland and is +4 for her Olympic career.

The Buckeye duo and Canada will face Sweden at 11:10 p.m. ET on Feb. 10.

Team USA

Jincy Dunne and the United States finished second in Group A with a 3-1 record in the preliminary round. Dunne has recorded three assists in her first Olympic games and owns a +3 on-ice rating through four games.

The U.S. will face off against Czechia in the quarterfinals on Feb. 10 at 11:10 p.m. ET.

Team Switzerland

In her first Olympic games as the starting goaltender for her home team, Andrea Braendli has made a tournament-high 163 saves. She owns a save percentage of .881 headed into the quarterfinals.

Braendli and Switzerland are set for a rematch against ROC on Feb. 11 at 11:10 p.m. ET. The Swiss look to win the second meeting between the two teams in Beijing after dropping the first matchup, 5-2.

Team Finland

Minttu Tuominen has recorded three points on two goals and an assist for Finland in the preliminary round. She is second in scoring by a defenseman and with a goal on the power play against the ROC, Tuominen has helped Finland to the second-best power play percentage (.353) at the games.  Finland finished the opening round 1-3, winning its final game of the round against ROC, 5-0.

The team meets Japan in the quarterfinals at 3:40 ET on Feb. 11.

Team Sweden

With back-to-back wins over China and Denmark in Group B of the preliminary round, Sofie Lundin and Sweden have secured a spot in the Olympic quarterfinals. The incoming Buckeye recorded two assists for the Swedes in Beijing, both in her team’s 3-1 win over the Danes in group play.

Lundin and Sweden will meet Canada on Feb. 11 at 8:10 a.m. in the elimination round.

Buckeyes In Beijing

  • Jincy Dunne, Sofie Lundin and Emma Maltais are all making their Olympic debuts at the Beijing Winter Olympics this year. All three have recorded points for their respective teams so far in the tournament.
  • Andrea Braendli was named the starting goaltender for Switzerland last summer ahead of the 2021 IIHF World Championships and has continued that role in Beijing.
  • Natalie Spooner is making her third trip to the Olympics while Minttu Tuominen is playing in her fourth Olympics.
  • Overall, nine Olympic medals have been won by Ohio State players at the Olympics. Among the current Buckeye Olympians, Spooner has a gold and silver while Tuominen has two bronze medals for her collection.
