Buckeyes Overwhelm Chaminade in Exhibition Action 101-57

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The 2022-23 iteration of The Ohio State men’s basketball team put in their final preseason tune up as they played host to the Silverswords of Chaminade at the Schottenstein Center on Tuesday evening. The Buckeyes dominated throughout on the way to a 101-57 victory.

Senior transfer Tanner Holden led the Buckeyes on the evening, pacing the Scarlet & Grey with 25 points. Overall, 10 players etched their name in the box score, including five in double figures.

Through the first five minutes of action, the Buckeyes looked to leading returning scorer Zed Key. Playing through the big man, Ohio State run out to a 13-5 advantage, with Key notching six early points. Transfer Isaac Likekele added five points in the run and capped it off with an and-one with 14:30 to play in the half.

The defense locked down Chaminade in the early going, forcing the Silverswords into 2-of-15 shooting from the field.

The visitors found their rhythm over the next four minutes, getting five points, each from Braden Olsen and Dorian Harris, to knot the game at 15-15.

From that point, the rest of the half was all Scarlet and Grey as the Buckeyes rattled off a 31-8 run to hold a 46-23 lead at the break. Holden was the star of the show in the opening half, dropping 19 on 7-of-9 shooting, including a fast-break, two-handed stuff for his final bucket of the frame.

Holden was the high-point man for the half off the bench, while Key added 11, and Likekele, seven. Olsen paced the Silverswoards in the opening half, scoring 10. The big advantage for the Buckeyes came in the paint, as Ohio State outscored their guests 28-6 down low in the opening half.

The Buckeyes caught fire from the arc in the second half, as Ohio State saw their lead balloon to as many as 47 (99-52) on a three-pointer by freshman Bowen Hardman. Hardman shot 4-of-6 from outside in the half, while Sean McNeil canned three triples in the frame. As a team, the Buckeyes shot 9-of-16 from deep in the second half and were led in scoring by Hardman and fellow freshman Rodd Gayle Jr., who finished with 11 in the closing half.

For the game, five Buckeyes finished in double digits, paced by Holden. He finished 10-of-12 from the field, adding six rebounds. Key posted 15, while Gayle Jr. and Hardman added 14, and 12, respectively. Likekele notched 10; McNeil finished with nine, and Brice Sensabaugh added eight. Freshman Bruce Thornton orchestrated the offense well throughout, dishing out 11 assists.

As a team, Ohio State shot 54% from the field and over 50% from deep while holding Chaminade to 27% shooting. The Buckeyes dominated the paint, outscoring the Silverswords 54-22 in the paint, and held an 18-7 advantage in fast-break points. The Buckeyes shared the ball extremely well, collecting 24 assists on 41 made buckets.

Ohio State will open the regular season in the friendly confines on Monday, Nov. 7, as they play host to Robert Morris. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed on BTN+.
