SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Ohio State opened the much anticipated 2019-20 season with a great defensive effort in an 89-38 victory over Valparaiso in the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at Wittenberg University on Sunday.

The Buckeyes turned on the defensive pressure in the second half, limiting the Crusaders to just 16 points and 4-of-25 shooting.

Dorka Juhasz led the Buckeyes with 16 points and seven rebounds. Jacy Sheldon scored 12 points, while Janai Crooms and Kierstan Bell each chipped-in with 10 points. All 10 Buckeyes that saw on Sunday got in the scorebook with at least four points.

After a sluggish opening quarter, OSU started the second quarter on an 8-2 run to open up a 23-13 lead and would hold a 40-22 edge at the break.

The third quarter was the difference in the game as Ohio State mixed a bit of full court and half court pressure to disrupt Valpo. The Crusaders scored just four points on 2-of-18 shooting and 0-9 from long range. The Buckeyes in turn scored 31 points on 70 percent shooting and led 71-26 after three.

Ohio State will continue its tour of Ohio this week as they head down I-71 to take on Cincinnati this Wednesday. Tip is set for 7 p.m. from Fifth Third Arena. The Buckeyes have won each of the last four meetings with the Bearcats dating back to 2015.
