Buckeyes Open Postseason With 4-2 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State women’s ice hockey opened post season play Friday evening with a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota State Mavericks. After two periods of even play, the Buckeyes scored two power play goals in the final frame to clinch game one of the best-of-three series. Game two of the WCHA First Round is slated for 3:07 p.m. tomorrow. With a win, the Buckeyes will advance to the WCHA Final Faceoff.

- Andrea Braendli notched 21 saves in net for the Buckeyes. Her season record improves to 17-5-5.
- Sophie Jaques tallied two points in the first period from a goal and an assist.
- Jincy Dunne had a team-high three points on the night from three assists.
- Emma Maltais scored the game-winning power play goal and notched an assist for a two point game. With her assist on Liz Schepers’ power play goal, Maltais tied the single season assist record for any Buckeye.
- Ohio State’s special teams was perfect on the night as they killed off a penalty and converted on two power plays.

First Period
The Buckeyes opened postseason with a goal by freshman Jenn Gardiner in the second minute of play. Her long-range shot was assisted by Jincy Dunne and Sophie Jaques. Jaques tallied her second point of the period with an unassisted goal ten minutes later. Andrea Braendli wasn’t forced to make a save until the thirteenth minute when the Buckeyes were on the penalty kill. Ohio State outshot the Mavericks 10-4 in the period and went into the locker room with the 2-0 advantage.
Second Period
Minnesota State netted two second period goals to even the score going into the final frame. Emily Antony scored her seventh goal of the season in the tenth minute and Anna Wilgren scored the equalizer just over five minutes later. The Buckeyes held the advantage in shots for the period, 13-8.
Third Period
With the score tied at 2-all, Minnesota State took a costly penalty and the Buckeyes converted to take the lead once again. Dunne fed Emma Maltais who rifled off a low-angle shot into the near post netting. In the 14th minute Minnesota’s Kelsey King was booked for interference and Liz Schepers converted to extend the lead to 4-2 less than 30 seconds later. The score held and the Buckeyes claimed game one of the best-of-three series. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 40-23.
