COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 9 Ohio State opens Big Ten play this weekend with two tough tests at No. 25 Northwestern and No. 6 Illinois. The Buckeyes are coming off a couple of wins over Michigan State last weekend and will need their best against two of the top teams in the conference. The match at Northwestern will start at 6 p.m. ET and the match at Illinois on Sunday is scheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start.
- This weekend is the start of Ohio State’s 16-match Big Ten schedule and the Buckeyes are starting with arguably the toughest road trip in the conference.
- Ohio State is 3-1 on the young season, having split its matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend and then sweeping Michigan State in a pair of non-conference matches last weekend.
- The Buckeyes swept MSU 7-0 and 4-0 and didn’t lose a set in either match.
- Northwestern comes into the weekend at 1-1 overall as the Wildcats also split their matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. They lost to eventual champion North Carolina and then beat No. 23 Duke.
- Illinois just finished hosting the ITA Indoor Team Championships last weekend. The Illini are 3-1 on the year. They beat Wisconsin prior to indoors and then took down the defending champion and No. 1 ranked USC in the opening round. They then fell to Baylor in the semis and \ finished-up with a 4-3 win over Virginia.
- The regular season and Big Ten Tournament Championships have both been won by either Ohio State or Illinois every season since 1997.
- The Buckeyes have won seven consecutive matches vs. Illinois and 17 consecutive matches vs.
- Ohio State has four ranked singles player and three ranked doubles teams. Kinglsey (#5), McNally (#11), Seelig (#25) and James Trotter (#80) are the ranked singles players, and the ranked doubles teams are McNally/Cash (#4), Trotter/James Boulais (#37) and Kinglsey/Seelig (#51).
