Buckeyes Fall to Gophers, 2-1 in Hockey Day Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 5 Ohio State women’s ice hockey fell to the No. 1-ranked Minnesota Gophers Saturday afternoon 2-1 in Hockey Day Minnesota 2020. The Gophers opened scoring and Sophie Jaques scored her second goal of the weekend to equalize but Minnesota struck again and clinched the win. With the loss, Ohio State moves to 14-6-4 (9-4-3 WCHA) and Minnesota improves to 20-2-3 (12-2-2 WCHA).

First Period
Ohio State led in shots throughout the first period but the Gophers struck first as time was expiring on a Minnesota power play. Minutes later, Liz Schepers connected with Sophie Jaques who went bar down on Sydney Scobee to equalize. Ohio State outshot Minnesota 15-12 in the first.

Second Period
Less than three minutes into the second period Minnesota capitalized on a tough bounce off the boards behind Andrea Braendli and notched the g0-ahead goal. The score held throughout the remainder of the period and the contest as Emily Oden secured the game-winning goal on the play.
Third Period
The Buckeyes held the advantage in shots through the contest and finished 48-41 over the Gophers. Andrea Braendli made 24 saves but the Buckeyes couldn’t convert on any of the four power play opportunities. The score held at 2-1 and the Gophers avoided the sweep.
