Buckeyes Earn Several 2022 Big Ten Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior midfielder Laurence Wootton and senior goalkeeper Keagan McLaughlin were named the best at their respective positions by a vote of the Big Ten Conference coaches, the league office announced Friday.

In addition to being named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year, both Wootton and McLaughlin earned 2022 First Team All-Big Ten honors after the Buckeyes posted a regular-season record of 9-2-5, earning a No. 3-seed in the annual league tournament.

Ohio State will play host to Michigan State, the No. 6 seed, at 7 p.m. tonight at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. For more on the matchup go HERE.

Wootton, a native of Stoke-on-Trent, England, is a three-time first team All-Big Ten selection. A first-time honoree, McLaughlin, from nearby Zanesville, Ohio, is in his second year at Ohio State after a transfer from Notre Dame.

McLaughlin recorded four shutouts for the Buckeyes this year and led the Big Ten in goals against average (1.00), save percentage (.774) and shutouts (4). Wootton led the Buckeyes in points (12), goals (5) and shots on goal (19). He also contributed two game-winning scores.

Senior midfielder Xavier Green, who hails from Kapiti Coast, New Zealand, and sophomore defender Anthony Samways, a native of Loveland, Ohio, were named to the 2022 All-Big Ten Second Team.

Samways led Ohio State with six assists while Green was second in points (10), goals (3) and assists (4).

Defender Tanner Creech and midfielder Luciano Pechota were selected to the 2022 All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Pechota’s selection was unanimous.

Pechota, an Avon, Ohio, native, played in all 16 games this season with a pair of goals, both game winners, and three assists for a total of seven points. Creech, from Cincinnati, Ohio, played in 14 games, starting 12. He had one goal and one assist on the year.

Brayden Durbin, a senior from Pickerington, Ohio, was named Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award Winner for 2022. He recorded a pair of goals in 2022 with eight starts in 16 appearances.
