Buckeyes Earn 4-0 Win Over Northeastern on Friday Afternoon


COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State’s 2022 field hockey season got off to a victorious start, as the Buckeyes shut out Northeastern on Friday afternoon, 4-0, on the campus of the University of Albany. Ohio State is 1-0 on the young season while Northeastern falls to 0-1.

The Short Story
Ohio State’s offensive attack was paced by four different goal scorers, as Cameryn Forgash, Zella Bailey, Hallie Brost and Claudia Thomas all found the back of the cage. The four of them led a unit that produced 26 total shots and 22 that ended up on goal.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, the Buckeyes pulled away in the third quarter with scores in a three-minute span from Bailey (40:48) and Brost (43:56). Forgash closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter at 47:52.

Junior goalkeeper Abby Danson played all 60 minutes in goal and registered her second career shutout. She made three saves and was aided by a defense in front of her that limited Northeastern to just three shots on goal.

How It Happened

  • Claudia Thomas broke a scoreless tie with 1:30 remaining in the first quarter to put Ohio State up 1-0. The scores would stay that way through the second quarter, as the Buckeyes took the one-goal edge into halftime.
  • In the third quarter, back to back Buckeye goals gave them more than enough breathing room. The first one came with under five minutes remaining in the quarter by Bailey, a freshman, was making her collegiate debut.
  • Three minutes later, Brost, a sophomore, netted a score to increase the Ohio State lead to 3-0.
  • The scoring was closed out in the fourth quarter by Forgash, who found the back of the cage less than three minutes in the final 15 minutes.

Buckeye This and That

  • Ohio State is 4-2 in season-opening games since the start of the 2017 campaign.
  • Fifth-year senior Emma Goldean started her 70th career game, which is the most of any active player on the roster.
  • Friday was just the third all-time meeting between Ohio State and Northeastern. The Huskies won the first two, in 1995 and 1997.
  • The Buckeyes are playing both of their opening-weekend games in Albany, N.Y. There are three New York natives on the 2022 roster – midfielder Leanne Bough (Whitney Point, N.Y.), goalkeeper Abby Danson (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and back Jenna Zunic (Johnson City, N.Y.).
  • Additionally, head coach Jarred Martin, who is in his sixth season at Ohio State, is from Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
  • Junior Makenna Webster, a transfer from the University of Wisconsin who will also play ice hockey at Ohio State, led the Buckeyes with six total shots.
  • Newcomers who earned starts in their Ohio State debuts were back Grace Kim, a graduate transfer from Duke, and Janneke van Stiphout.
