Buckeyes Drop First Meet of Season; Now 7-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Previously unbeaten and No. 11-ranked Ohio State travelled to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete against the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines Saturday afternoon. The home team prevailed, 197.075-196.350, handing the Buckeyes their first loss of the season and leaving them with records of 1-1 in the Big Ten Conference and 7-1 overall.

The top scoring individual performances for the Buckeyes included 9.900 scores by Colby Miller on uneven bars, Sydney Jennings on vault and Elexis Edwards on floor exercise. Miller finished second on bars while Jennings was third on vault and Edwards finished fourth on floor. Payton Harris topped all Buckeye scorers on balance beam with a 9.825 that placed her fourth.

Harris, a freshman from Franklin, Wisc., set a new career-high with a 39.250 score on all-around. Her total included scores of 9.800 on uneven bars, 9.825 on vault and 9.800 on floor exercise, in addition to her 9.825 on balance beam.

MEET NOTES

  • Ohio State opened the meet with a 49.275 score on the uneven bars. Colby Miller led the team with a 9.900 score, good for second-place. Nicole Riccardi was fifth with a 9.875 score. Elexis Edwards hit her season’s best for the third time this year, a 9.850 score that positioned her in seventh.
  • Rotation No. 2 had the Buckeyes on vault. The team’s 49.225 score featured season-high scores for Sydney Jennings of 9.900, which placed her third, and Raina Malas with a 9.850, which positioned her in sixth. Two other Buckeyes – Jenna Hlavach and Nicole Riccardi – tied their season-high scores with 9.825s.
  • Elexis Edwards was Ohio State’s top scorer on floor exercise, scoring a 9.900 which placed her fourth. Savannah Gonzalez set a personal season-high of 9.825 and finished in a tie for seventh with two other gymnasts, including Claire Gagliardi. As a team, Ohio State scored 49.150 points on floor.
  • Ohio State scored 48.700 points on its final rotation of the meet, balance beam. Payton Harris placed fourth overall and led Ohio State with a 9.825 score. Alexis Hankins and Emma Pritchard scored 9.800s to tie for fifth with Pritchard tying her season high in the process.
  • Ohio State gymnasts have now hit 9.900 or higher scores nine times this year.
