COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team secured a 3-1 victory (25-20, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20) over Rutgers Wednesday night on BTN inside the Covelli Center. The win lifts the Buckeyes to 11-10 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten while the Scarlet Knights drop to 6-14 on the season and 0-9 in league outings.
Jenaisya Moore paced the offense with 15 kills, her fifth straight match in double figures. Elle Sandbothe added 11 kills, four blocks and three digs to the mix. Gabby Gonzales chipped in nine digs and seven kills.
Becca Mauer recorded 27 assists, four digs, two kills, two service aces and one rejection. Kylie Murr had a match-high 15 digs while Lauren Witte notched three aces, three digs and two blocks.
SET 1: Back-to-back kills by Sandbothe extended Ohio State’s lead to 11-6. A 6-0 run by the Buckeyes forced the Scarlet Knights to call a timeout as they trailed 18-9. Five straight points by Rutgers cut the deficit to 22-18 but a Mauer-Sandbothe block sealed a 25-20 win.
SET 2: Consecutive aces capped off a 6-1 sprint for the Buckeyes, which put them up 8-4. Ohio State strung together five points to push the advantage to 18-8 but the Scarlet Knights responded with an 8-1 run to pull within three. The Buckeyes scored four of the last five points of the set and ended things on Gonzales’ ace, 25-18.
SET 3: Ohio State needed a break early as Rutgers jumped ahead 9-3. The Buckeyes tried to fight their way back as they whittled the lead down to 20-15, which sent the Scarlet Knights to their bench. Rutgers had the final four points to take the set, 25-18.
SET 4: The Buckeyes doubled up on the Scarlet Knights, 14-7. Ohio State kept cruising as Sandbothe’s kill opened the gap to 19-13. Rutgers attempted to capitalize on a few OSU mistakes but the home squad held on for a 25-20 victory.
The Buckeyes visit No. 17 Illinois for a 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET outing on Saturday, Oct. 26.
