Buckeyes’ Beam Team Shines in Win Over Maryland

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team had one of its best outings in program history on Sunday, earning a score of 197.575 to defeat Maryland (196.475) at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes earned season-high results on beam, floor and vault to reach the second-best overall score in program history.

The Buckeyes swept the individual event titles and team event titles as 10 scores of 9.900 or higher were recorded on the day.

MEET NOTES

  • The beam team stole the show Sunday, earning a program record 49.525 with four gymnasts scoring 9.900s. Sydney Jennings and Tory Vetter each earned career-high marks with 9.925 scores to earn the event title. Ella Hodges and Payton Harris both scored 9.900s to tie for third. Alexis Hankins and Emma Pritchard scored a 9.875 and 9.800, respectively.
  • The team generated great momentum in the first rotation, scoring a season-best 49.300 on vault with the final three Buckeyes in the lineup earning 9.900 scores. Jennings, Harris and Elexis Edwards each scored a 9.900 to finish first overall and close out the rotation on a high note. Nicole Riccardi tied her season-best 9.825 while Raina Malas and Vetter posted 9.775s.
  • On uneven bars, Riccardi led the meet with a career-high tying 9.950 for the second time this season. Edwards and Colby Miller tied for fourth overall with 9.875 scores. Harris and Vetter each scored a 9.825 while Emma Pritchard went 9.775. The team earned a score of 49.350 to win the event title.
  • Ohio State ended the meet with another strong outing on floor, with two Buckeyes scoring 9.900s and finishing with an overall score of 49.400. With the last routine of the day, Hodges scored a career-high 9.925 for the Buckeyes. Edwards scored a 9.900 in the second-to-last routine of the afternoon, her fourth straight 9.900 or better this season. Claire Gagliardi scored a 9.875 for Ohio State while Harris and Vetter recorded 9.850s. Savannah Gonzalez earned a 9.800.
  • Both Harris and Vetter competed in the all-around today for the Buckeyes. Harris led the way with a 39.475, her second-best score of the season. In her first meet in the all-around for Ohio State, Vetter posted a 39.375.
  • Ohio State is undefeated at home this season, winning three meets at the Covelli Center in 2023.
  • The Buckeyes have now recorded two top-five program scores this season. The team’s 197.225 against Iowa now ranks fourth in program history.

Ohio State will compete against Illinois on Monday, Feb. 13 in Champaign. The meet between the Buckeyes and Illini will start at 9 p.m. ET and be televised nationally on the Big Ten Network.
