Buckeyes Advance in NCAA Tournament with 5-1 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio –Ohio State’s 2021 All-Big Ten selections put their talents on display Wednesday in a 5-1 win vs. Stony Brook (6-4-0) in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament in Greenville, North Carolina.

Alyssa Baumbick, a Third Team All-Big Ten selection this year, put Ohio State (8-2-3) on the board first with a goal in the 8th minute. It was her second of the season and sixth career. The assist went to First Team All-Big Ten selection Kayla Fischer, her fourth of the season and 10th career.

Just four minutes later, Emma Sears, a sophomore Second Team All-Big Ten honoree, put the Buckeyes up 2-0 with her seventh goal of the season. Peyton McNamara was credited with the assist, the third for the 2021 Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

The Seawolves cut into the Ohio State lead with a goal in the 18th minute to make it 2-1 Buckeyes.

Baumbick struck again in the 20th minute from Sears to make it 3-1 Buckeyes. Her seventh career goal marked the second two-goal game of her career. She scored twice against Morehead State Aug. 30, 2018 in an 8-0 Ohio State win in Columbus. For Sears, it was her third assist on the year and fourth career.

Kitty Jones-Black put Ohio State up 4-1 with her second career goal and first of the season in the 40th minute.

Senior Meghan Kammerdeiner scored her first of the year and sixth career goal in the 75th minute for the game’s final score.

The five goals scored by the Buckeyes are the most in NCAA Tournament play in program history. Ohio State had scored three goals five times previously in NCAA play, all wins.

The Buckeyes outshot the Seawolves 26-12 with Ohio State owning a 11-4 edge with shots on net.

Keeper Bailey Kolinski recorded a pair of saves for the Buckeyes in the win.

The Buckeyes are making their 14th NCAA Tournament appearance (13-12-2). The win was the first for Ohio State in NCAA Tournament play since a 3-2 win over Dayton Nov. 12, 2016 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the Ohio State campus.

Ohio State advances to face Santa Clara (7-1), the No. 11 seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, at 8 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Stadium on the campus of East Carolina University. The game will be streamed on ESPN3.
