COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team earned some Western Collegiate Hockey Association hardware today with Andrea Braendli earning the NCAA No. 3 Star of the Week and WCHA Goaltender of the Week, and Sophie Jaques bringing home the WCHA Defenseman of the Week, both powered by GoodWood Hockey, conference officials announced on Tuesday.
Braendli had the game of her young career on Friday, notching a 32-save shutout against No. 1 Wisconsin. The freshman made some amazing stops late in the third to secure the shutout, her third of the season, and give the Buckeyes a win over the top ranked Badgers. This week’s honor marks the fourth time this season the freshman goalie has earned conference recognition after winning two Rookie of the Week awards, and one Goaltender of the Week award already. This is the first time the goaltender has received NCAA recognition.
Jaques shined under the pressure of facing the top team in the country, finishing the weekend with a team-high three points. Jaques assisted on the lone goal from Friday’s 1-0 shutout win, and followed that with a goal and an assist in Saturday’s finale. The freshmen put it all on the line Friday, blocking four shots to help secure the shutout. This is the first WCHA honor for Jaques.
The Buckeyes hit the road this weekend for a showdown with Minnesota Duluth. Game one of the series is set for an 8:07 p.m. start on Friday.
