Complete week recap

COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second consecutive season, an Ohio State doubles team was the last team standing at the ITA Fall National Championship. JJ Tracy and Andrew Lutschuanig took down the No. 3 ranked team of Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted of TCU 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 to win this year’s title.

This was the third consecutive season an Ohio State doubles team played for an ITA Fall Nationals title. The win also ties the Buckeyes with USC for the most doubles titles at the ITA Fall Nationals with five.

Tracy and Lutschaunig started strong on Sunday, winning the first two games and riding that momentum to a 6-3 victory. In the second, TCU won the opening game and the Buckeyes answered with a big hold from 0-40. TCU then got the first break and like the Buckeyes in the first, the Horned Frog duo held to a 6-3 win.

For the fifth consecutive match this week, the Buckeyes found themselves in a super-breaker to decide the match. Sunday’s breaker was the best of the week. Tracy and Lutschaunig raced to a 4-0 lead and led 5-1 at the first change over. They never let up and would cruise to a 10-4 victory.

The Buckeye duo opened the week with a 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 win over the No. 5-ranked team Joshua Charlton and Quin Vandecasteele of Oregon. On Thursday, they bested Matisse Bobichon and Rayane Stable of VCU 7-6(2), 3-6, 10-5 and then took down the No. 21-ranked dui of Max Westphal and Theo Winegar of Columbia 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 on Friday.

Saturday’s semifinal was a great match. Tracy and Lutschaunig won the first two games of the match against Baylor’s 14th ranked team of Jake Finn Bass Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchiand. They would hold that advantage the rest of the first set to a 6-4 victory. Baylor’s duo broke early in the second set and went on to a 6-3 win.

That setup a good tiebreaker. Both teams held serve through the first five points and then Tracy ripped a forehand to give the OSU a 4-2 lead at the first change over. After a Baylor point, Lutschaunig held on both his service points which was then followed by a Baylor double-fault. Trailing 7-3, the Baylor duo battled back to get back on serve at 7-6 with three consecutive points. Lutschaunig then hit a winner to give the Buckeyes an 8-6 and that was the margin they needed. The Richboro, Pa., native finished the match with two more points from the service line and the Buckeyes were on to the finals.

This was the sixth time an Ohio State doubles team reached the finals of the ITA Fall Nationals. Robert Cash and Matej Vocel won the title last fall while Cash and John McNally finished runner-up in 2019. Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola won the title in 2011 while Scott Green and Ross Wilson are the only duo to repeat as champions, winning back-to-back in 2004 and 2005.
