Bartsch-Hackley Joins Oldenburg’s Coaching Staff

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball program and Head Coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg announced the addition of Michelle Bartsch-Hackley to the Buckeyes’ coaching staff on Thursday. Bartsch-Hackley will serve as the volunteer assistant coach.

“I am thrilled to add Michelle Bartsch-Hackley to our staff,” Oldenburg said. “Her knowledge of the game, experience and success at the highest level will have an immediate impact on our program.”

“I’m really excited to be joining the coaching staff and to be a part of a program that I have grown to love from afar,” Bartsch-Hackley said. “I’m grateful for this opportunity and want to thank everyone who has welcomed me to Ohio State.”

Bartsch-Hackley was a part of history as Team USA won Olympic gold for the first time ever at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by sweeping Brazil. She was named Co-Best Outside Hitter following that Olympic run, alongside one of her teammates. Bartsch-Hackley also won gold as a member of the U.S. Team in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Tournament in 2021, earning the title of Best Outside Hitter and Tournament MVP. Bartsch-Hackley was an alternate for Team USA for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Bartsch-Hackley began her professional playing career in 2012 with Llaneras de Toa Baja in Puerto Rico. She won the German Cup in 2014 with Rote Raben Vilsbiburg before winning the 2015 and 2016  German Championships as a member of Dresdner SC. Bartsch-Hackley went on to win gold as a member of the U.S. National Team at the 2015 Pan American Games and 2017 Women’s Pan-American Volleyball Cup and a bronze medal at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Grand Champions Cup. She also played in Italy, China and most recently Turkey.

Bartsch-Hackley, a 2012 Illinois graduate with a degree in sports management, was inducted into the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 2020. She led the Fighting Illini to the NCAA Championship match her senior season after three-consecutive Sweet 16 appearances and played for Oldenburg for all four seasons, as Oldenburg was an assistant coach. Bartsch-Hackley earned multiple All-American, All-Region and All-Big Ten accolades as she was also the AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2008.
